Why we’re perplexed by Sarah Palin

So, it's official: John McCain announced on Friday that he's picked a woman as his running mate, Alaskan governor Sarah Palin. And while most of us here at Shine are normally thrilled to see a strong-willed, principled woman rise to such great heights in the halls of power, we're still all sorting through why it is we just feel so conflicted if not sometimes a little disappointed in this woman.

We're not talking about Palin's politics; we're talking about her as a metaphor. She's the latest example of  just how complicated it is being a modern woman. She's a total briar patch of strengths, weaknesses, triumphs, and outrage. That's why we here on Shine have been busy blogging about all those things that impress us, infuriate us, makes us envious, and confuse us completely.

Sarah Palin is a self-proclaimed feminist role model. The way she sees it, she proves that any woman can work a high-powered job and ascend through the ranks, all while having as many children as you want and being a mother to that family. She's a state governor AND a mother of five -- that's absolutely impressive. I only have one kid, and I often feel like I'm barely pulling off the juggle from day to day.

But, the inevitable questions creep up about her ability to truly be a good mom to her kids, especially since news that 17-year-old daughter Bristol who is now five months pregnant with her high-school boyfriend's child came to light. Many women are left wondering: Is she really the amazing, do-it-all supermom that she claims to be? And honestly, does she really have to be?

This, of course, raises more questions for us:

So, go check out our stories and posts by some of your fellow Shine readers, and tell us what you think of our many questions. Does she leave you with some of the same ones we have? And does that affect your vote? Leave a comment or feel free to go all out and write out your own blog post about it.

i firmly believe that the republicans selected her cuz 1)she is a hottie

2)to pull in the women's vote

3)to be a second choice for women mad that obama did not pick hilary clinton as his vp nominee.

This election has nothing to do with race, sex, or origin. However, if you are sexist, raceist, and have a closed mind, then mabey these play an important role in how you will vote. Forget this blog no offence, just rather see the homeless and hungry in this country get the headlines. I would rather see the war end, and the bloodletting stop. I really hope people don't get hung up on issues that have nothing to do with the horridity of war, and famin, and the future of our America.

Nothing against her values ,but with all the motherhood obligations she has ,unless she's Wonder Woman there's no way on earth she can handle the VP's position. And if republicans let emotion get in the way of believing she's upto the pressure and task of the position, and some how get her elected, along with shoot first and ask questions later ,The original Mavrick",John Mccaine, all i have to say is God help us!!!

Palin is a phony who thinks only of herself. While Repubs are drooling over her because she carried a Downs Syndrome baby to term, let's not forget she is NOT home taking care of that infant like all the millions of other mothers of special needs babies. Four months old. There's nothing unique about carrying a baby...caring for it is what makes the woman. She has a second special needs child, a 17 year old who is pregnant, who got pregnant a month before her mom delivered. Was she sending her mom a desperate message to BE a mom instead of pretending to be? What drives this woman is pure, selfish ambition, not integrity, not a desire to serve. It's the almost-made-it beauty pageant mentality of ME, ME, ME first, while saying anything to be in the spotlight, get attention, photo-ops. If it wasn't a beauty pageant, then politics will do.

McCain's choosing of her is sooo transparent and very crafty. But not only is she NOT taking care of her Downs Syndrome infant, she is turning her back on that poor baby and her daughter as well (dragging the kid who is the dad to the convention to show him off is disgusting)while she is running all over the country chasing a job for which she is, LISTEN PEOPLE, TOTALLY, FRIGHTENINGLY UNQUALIFIED for. She is so obviously a shallow, selfish cartoon next to the real statesmen and women of this country it would be hilarious if it were't so appalling and alarming. She has no depth, political or otherwise. So she's anti-abortion. So's everybody. Lots of people, however, believe that instead of legislating what women should do with their bodies after the fact, men should take responsibility for not irresponsibly impregnating women in the first place.Furthermore, lots of women shoot guns and go fishing. Does this mean they can govern responsibly? Of course not, and neither can she. Too selfish. Absolutely inexperienced on the big stage. And they both love the word 'maverick' and love to call themselves that, but neither one of them is.Just slightly recycled oldtimey stuff. Oh yes, and she promised him the pipeline on the North Slope, which is our last pristine wildlife refuge to be devastated, where, oh so coincidentally, her husband works.

McCain chose her to get the vote by fooling people. Isn't eight years of fooling people enough for the American people. Aren't we smarter than this. "A tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

Why are all of these questions about her personal life and not about what she can or can't do for our country. Get over it! My mom had five kids, they was a teenage pregnancy, and many other problems that the average American mom deals with but they didn't affect her job performance. Everyone really needs to stop scrutinizing her personal life and look at her professional record.

She needs to sit back and take care of her baby and prepare to be a grandmother, two babies in the same year!

Stick to the political issues, not personal! She is by far more qualified than Obama and shes not running for president! The Dems don't have much going for them this election.

Take a look REAL hard at this woman. Look at her as being potentially the next president of the united states..... yes president. John MCain is 150 years old. Do you... can you... see THIS woman...as our next president should something happen to McCain if he were elected?

    Thats scary.

Leave the children out of the race. John McCain has checked Sarah Palin out I'm sure very well before he would tell the nation who he picked. Who in the World doesn't have some baggage or dirt in the family. We are all sinners. Who of you are with out sin cast a stone. God be with us all though this election.
