Why we’re perplexed by Sarah Palin

So, it's official: John McCain announced on Friday that he's picked a woman as his running mate, Alaskan governor Sarah Palin. And while most of us here at Shine are normally thrilled to see a strong-willed, principled woman rise to such great heights in the halls of power, we're still all sorting through why it is we just feel so conflicted if not sometimes a little disappointed in this woman.

We're not talking about Palin's politics; we're talking about her as a metaphor. She's the latest example of  just how complicated it is being a modern woman. She's a total briar patch of strengths, weaknesses, triumphs, and outrage. That's why we here on Shine have been busy blogging about all those things that impress us, infuriate us, makes us envious, and confuse us completely.

Sarah Palin is a self-proclaimed feminist role model. The way she sees it, she proves that any woman can work a high-powered job and ascend through the ranks, all while having as many children as you want and being a mother to that family. She's a state governor AND a mother of five -- that's absolutely impressive. I only have one kid, and I often feel like I'm barely pulling off the juggle from day to day.

But, the inevitable questions creep up about her ability to truly be a good mom to her kids, especially since news that 17-year-old daughter Bristol who is now five months pregnant with her high-school boyfriend's child came to light. Many women are left wondering: Is she really the amazing, do-it-all supermom that she claims to be? And honestly, does she really have to be?

This, of course, raises more questions for us:

So, go check out our stories and posts by some of your fellow Shine readers, and tell us what you think of our many questions. Does she leave you with some of the same ones we have? And does that affect your vote? Leave a comment or feel free to go all out and write out your own blog post about it.

Just want to share with you why I think Gov. Palin is a breath of fresh air for all of us. I like to look at a person's actions and accomplishments, not the lip service and empty promises most folks in politics give out.

I like the way she got to where she is in right now. A Mother taking her children to school, practice, games and then getting active in her community. She wanted to make a difference, make a change in the way the town was being run. Like most of us she was tired of the lies and corruption that runs rampent in ALL government levels.

WOW, look at her actions of cleaning up HER party and then as Governor, one of the first things she did was cut back on the expenses of running the state of Alaska by selling the jet aircraft the previous governor bought. When Washington tried to send Federal money to build a bridge to nowhere, she said NO! These are actions we all talk about when we talk about govenment spending, it's your money and she appears to be a good stewart. And she is probably one of the top ten most knowledgeable people on energy in the United States.

You have to admire her for not only raising a family but also pursuing a career of her own choosing and doing the right thing, not trying to take advantage of a governmental position. Speaking of her family, the nay sayers are slinging the mud all over her daughter and I am just sick of it. Let me ask you, in this day and time are MOST 17 year old teenagers having sex? What makes you think you can stop kids from exploring???? Throughout history, 17 year old girls have been getting pregnant. Please let them get through these challenges as a family, not public scrutiny.

I suggest you find out for yourself who this woman is without the bias media machine giving their slant.

Very well said from everyone above, she is so far removed from the reality of being an american woman, just like the republicans for choosing a woman of this stature, baffle em with bull s---. I hope the republicans don't fall for it a third term. Talk about two different americas. Somebody hasn't been listening.

Well put Gypsy, that pretty much sums it up.

Her way of dispensing her values seems off. It's great to stand up for what you believe in and to live by your own code of ethics and morals, but don't do it in such a back-a--ward way, it makes you look foolish. We don't need anymore fools in office who want to dominate using their choice of religion to subdue the masses. So she's pro-life. Who cares? Here's a news flash, being pro-choice doesn't make you pro-abortion. You can be pro-choice and not endorse abortion. The government shouldn't have control over our reproductive rights. Period. Separation of church and state, my friends! Anyway, I digress. The pick of Palin by McCain is so shallow and transparent, it was hastily done, in an attempt to level the playing fields, and unfortunately, it's a ploy that won't work with most people.

To the author: You're wrong about what the most important question is. It's actually the next to last question you asked: "If she were a man, would we be holding her to this standard?" The answer, of course, is absolutely not! So why are you?

Barack Obama's mother became pregnant with him at 18 years old, out of wedlock. She then married the father and gave birth to Barack a few months later. If we are going to insult Bristol Palin and Sarah Palin, while we're at it, let's insult Obama's mother too! But we don't see that happening, do we?

As a moderate (and one who's voting 3rd party in this election), it's interesting to see the sexism toward Palin that is raging in the liberal circles. What is at base being said is, "Sarah Palin, get back in the kitchen and take care of your baby." This is so vile, so wrong, and so disgusting to see the women of this country treating another woman this way. I hope to God that no woman who is saying this about Palin thinks herself a feminist, because this is placing such restricting limitations on a woman who has earned this honor and has proved herself worthy to have and raise five children while being governor. She should be respected, yet people are running her through the mud. I keep hearing variations of the author's statement, "i have (x number of kids), and i can barely make it so I doubt her ability to handle the VP role." Well, it isn't Sarah Palin's fault that you're struggling with your one child! Try living in Alaska where women are actually raised to be strong and independent and multi-manage all aspects of their lives.

And to put an end to this assumption that Bristol's boyfriend is being forced to marry her, I did the research (and I'm not even a journalist!) and found that his mother talked to the media and revealed that he and Bristol planned to marry even before she became pregnant. So let's end the speculation and start working with the facts, like the reasonable, mature women I know we all can be. http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2008/09/bristol_palin_boyfriend_conven.html

As for the "hottie" comment, do we really think Barack Obama would be where he is if he weren't a "hottie" and a gift public speaker? Of course not. Cause he's offering more of the same liberal agenda as any democrat on Capitol Hill.

No matter who wins this election, we're getting more of the same.

Far more qualified? The woman has 20 months of experience. She just wanted to be a "stay at home" mom and was pulled into being the mayor of a town too small for a mayor in Alaska. She wants to do away with sex education and promote abstinence which proved not to work in her own household. She's a joke!

I'm offended that McCain thinks women are that dumb. As if we will say, "oh, well Palin is a woman, too. Let's vote for her!" Um, no.

David, since your argument rests on calling someone names instead of sticking to the issues, the ISSUES, your argument is as shallow as Palin is. I didn't call myself a liberal, so neither can you. And looking at a person's personal life and the choices they make is the one big clue to how they will conduct themselves publicly. Her CHOICE to not accept God's work for her, taking real care of her special needs children while pretending to be qualified for a job she has no qualifications for, indicate her level of decision making. And to the contributor who said her own mom had five kids and worked...ok, but her job was not potentially the president of the United States. And as for looking at her political record...what is there? Nothing but a potential scandal.

There is nothing wrong with looking good and having brains to. If this were a man would all of you be talking about him like this.

I foresee great strides for women with Palin's vice-presidency term. I expect that we will see many photo shoots of a play pen in the office (and that's a good thing!), Working moms with babies at work will become a focus and we might see a huge surge in onsite nursery provisions. Another good thing! The neat thing about all of the Hillary folks switching to support Palin, as they appear to be doing, is that we truly may see two women, Sarah and Hillary, running for the presidency in four years. That's exciting.
