Like any true artist, she battled through her demons by, what else? Writing songs. Anyone familiar with Alanis knows the girl does not bite her tongue or mince words. Her new album, Flavors of Entanglement, drops June 10.
But, let's momentarily step back in time to 1995. Jagged Little Pill is probably one of the most recognizable and important releases of the '90s. It catapulted her to stardom. Alanis became a more articulate, intelligent alternative to Courtney Love. I can't imagine any young woman back then who didn't own this album and could sing along to every song. It was like therapy. Angry therapy.
If only Alanis could have taken her own advice in her time of darkness! I remember using Jagged Little Pill as my little answer book to every problem I was having. I can only imagine what Alanis felt when she heard about Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynold's engagement. Dagger --> Heart. So I patched together her lyrics from Jagged Little Pill, of what she would have written to Ryan upon hearing this news:
Dear Ryan,
I want you to know, that I'm happy for you. I wish nothing but the best for you both. Cause the love that you gave that we made wasn't able to make it enough for you to be open wide. (Does she know how you told me you'd hold me until you died?) What I wouldn't give to find a soulmate. We all had a thing or two to learn. And all I really want is some patience. A way to calm the angry voice. What it all comes down to is that everything's gonna be quite alright 'cause I've got one hand in my pocket. I've never felt this healthy before. I am aware now. What I learned I rejected but I believe again. Isn't it ironic... don't you think? You live you learn.
Love,
Alanis
