8 Tasty Ice Cream Sandwiches to Try Right Now

Cones are out. Cookies are in.
We've scoured the nation for the tastiest ice cream sandwiches; some you can order online and some are worth the road trip. Here are our favorites:

  1. Pick any flavor at San Francisco's Humphry Slocombe--try their popular Vietnamese coffee ice cream--and the parlor will sandwich it between two tasty fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies. Those soft, decadent cookies nearly steal the show from the filling. Who knew  ice cream specialists could be cookie connoisseurs, too?

Check out Bon Appetit's all-time favorite cookie recipes.

  2. Brooklyn's One Girl Cookies merges two old-school favorites in an updated, dangerously addictive dessert: the whoopee-pie ice cream sandwich. Moist, tender cookies that are slightly crispy around the edges (our favorite is the pumpkin) are filled with fresh vanilla ice cream.
  3. Ruby Jewel Treats, whose ice cream sandwiches debuted at Portland area farmers' markets, may have achieved the perfect cookie-to-ice-cream ratio. Their sandwiches are handmade from all-natural Northwest ingredients, including locally grown mint, honey, lavender, and hormone-free milk from Oregon's Lochmead Dairy. The Lemon Cookie with Honey Lavender is tangy but sweet, with light floral notes.
  4. Trader Joe's stocks their shelves with seasonal products, but we hope their Mini Mint Ice Cream Mouthfuls become available all year long. It's impossible to have just one of these bite-size treats; luckily, there are 12 in a box.

Delicious ice cream pies and cakes you won't be able to resist.

  5. Since 1928, the It's-It, a chocolate-dipped oatmeal cookie ice cream sandwich from the San Francisco Bay Area, has set the bar for drugstore and supermarket freezer treats. While it was formerly only available in Northern California, it can now be found at a number of supermarkets in states west of the Rockies.
  6. Carmela caught our attention at a Los Angeles farmers' market with their salted caramel ice cream, and we've been following their delicious, elegant flavors ever since. It's no surprise that their subtly sweet sandwiches are a cut above the rest. In one variety, dark chocolate fleur de sel cookies sandwich mint-cocoa nib ice cream that perfectly captures the flavor of just-picked mint.
  7. Jeni's in Ohio is known for creating uniquely flavored, velvety ice cream with high-quality ingredients. Out-of-state customers can order the ice cream online, but only in-state fans can have theirs between two almond French-style macaroons. Does it get any better than the strawberry-rose petal ice cream sandwich? We think not.

  8. QB has ingeniously tweaked the old-fashioned Rice Krispies treat into a freezer-friendly dessert. Now available at most Whole Foods Markets, these unconventional  treats come filled with vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry ice cream. The all-natural marshmallow cereal bar stays surprisingly crispy, even with its ice cream center.

I grew up eating It's-Its. Sold them during recess in 6th grade. I had no idea they weren't available to everyone!

Now, what's this about a rice-krispy ice cream sandwich? My two favorite things combined? I'm running to the nearest Whole Foods and relaxing into an evening of gluttony.

QBs are the best! Its pretty hard to believe that no one had thought of putting a Rice Krispy around ice cream, and it is amazing. The first time I bought them, my cashier told me they were the perfect hangover food, and he always kept them around for post-party pick me ups.

The boxed are pretty hilarious, too. The QB 'characters' are bizarrely 'multicultural' and the design is really out there.
