Behind the Next Iron Chef new episode: The churro, ugly garnishes, and how to lose

Last week’s challenge was a really important test for the competing chefs. It was very similar to what they will actually face when in kitchen stadium.  Creating a sweet and savory dish with the same ingredient really tests the chef’s ability to interpret flavors.

A trend with all the contestants was the poor execution of the sweet dish. Generally speaking, chefs are pretty bad when it comes to desserts – there is a reason why they don’t do it. That’s what a pastry chef is for! However, chefs do need to have dessert skill sets on a basic level. As an Iron Chef, you are constantly battling with a single ingredient and sweet interpretations are unavoidable. An Iron Chef has to have the creativity and technique to do many variations on the same item.

I was sad to see another female chef get eliminated from the competition. Chef Cren is very talented, but she has struggled through the four challenges she competed in.  At the end of the day, the technique on the churro was poor – there is just no excuse for serving raw dough.

As you also saw, there was a discussion about the dried pepper garnish on her soup. Inedible garnishes are always a debate and it’s my opinion that if a garnish is inedible it needs to serve another purpose (whether it be aroma or beauty) and this didn’t add anything.

To be an Iron Chef, you have to master all the fundamentals and technique has to be mastered. You need to know the rules in order to break the rules! Sometimes it is so close between the bottom two contestants, mere over-or under-seasoning can push one contestant out the door. It’s unfortunate it gets so close between two chefs – but the judges take the judging very seriously and sometimes the debate goes on for hours (and then edited down to mere seconds for TV time).

Jeffrey and I agreed on more this episode than in the previous ones – we certainly have different opinions when it comes to food!

What's in the picture? It looks like diarrhea with little poops on the side! Is that plate called "eau de toilette"?

I love Food Network, and that's why I love The Next Iron Chef, but Donatella is definitely the winner of each episode with her disagreements with Jeffrey. They totally make the show worth watching till the very end.

I love this show!! I have a couple favorites.. Chef Freitag,Appleman, and Garces are/were my favorite. I think chef Cren deserved to get cut especially since she's been consistently struggling for the last few challenges. I can't stand Jeffery, he's gross and annoying lol

Well, I used to like Food Network till this season of Next Iron Chef. None of these competitors deserves to be put in the same league like Morrimoto, Flay or Batalli. All of them are recycled competitors from other shows on FN and what is tested in these "cooking" competitions of this season is not the skill in ckkoing but the level of "bitchiness"- the bigger of an ass you are the higher the chances of winning. It really hurts to watch the show. I know that weird things happen in professional kitchens, but you never have to elbow your sous chef for a pot or a carrot. Even on the Iron Chef America all the necessary ingridients are provided and the chefs don't fight over stuff. The show is more like a reality freak show of MTV level rather than a serious competition you would expect on a serious network. A great message to all the cooks out there: be an ass and you will get far. This is just what I want to see...
