Butter with Olive Oil: How Does It Taste?

When you're at a restaurant do you prefer to eat your bread with olive oil or butter? Perhaps both? Here's a thought. Land O' Lakes just launched butter with olive oil ($2.49 for 7 oz tub), which is said to have 0 trans fat, 45 percent less saturated fat, and 50 percent less cholesterol than regular butter. So it's a healthier alternative to butter, but does it taste good?

We were intrigued by this 3 ingredient spread made of cream, olive oil and salt. We wanted to know if it really tastes like olive oil or butter. We gathered around and each took a sample of this slightly pale yellow spread with a regular butter-like consistency. "Slightly sweet, creamy and oily," said one taster. "Certainly tastes more like olive oil than butter," commented another. "I don't love it, but I don't think its bad," declared another.

One editor was happy to find that this could be a great alternative for butter lovers who have high cholesterol, but just can't live without the stuff.

Would you give butter with olive oil a try?

You left out the most important detail. What's it's consistency like? Is it viscous yellowy like olive oil or is it soft and squishy not so viscous like butter. If I butter myself up with olive-oil butter will I tan better?

I don't know about butter with olive oil but I had tried some smart balence 50/50 blend and it gave me horrible digestive issues the whole time I used it. I ended up throwing away what I didn't use already and in about 3 days, I was back to normal.

smart balance has had olive oil butter out for about a year now, and ALL of their products have no trans fat. It spreads nicely and tastes pretty good, sounds like it's much better than this land o lakes which you called "oily". Nobody wants oily tasting butter.

I have used a mixtuure of butter and olive oil to quickly saute meats and veggies for some years...the olive oil prevents the butter from becoming too brown and burning...i don't know about using it as a spread, but it works for me in cooking...of course, i use olive oil a great deal and like the taste and consistency...it is so healthy...i like to make a seasoned dipping sauce for bread with it...so, yes, i would probably try the Land 'O Lakes product...

Some people just dont know better, actually according to the FDA there is no butter w/o trans fat... it depends on the serving, acording to serving size, one tablespoon might have .5 grams of trans fat and still be considered trans fat-free, because in their standards book, any product which contains zero to .5 grams of trans fat it can be label as free of trans fat. check here if you want straight out of FDA:

    http://www.foodsafety.gov/~dms/qatrans2.html

The question is on the paragraft after the Macaroni and cheese nutrional label example.

So bottom line is: there is no butter subtitute out of trans fat, if you take double or triple the serving amount, youll triple the amount of trans fat too. so Watch out fot serving size!
