I recently read about the Al Dente Operatic Pasta Timer on The Kitchn and was immediately interested & amused.
But, I've got a cheaper (and more fun) way to make sure my pasta is al dente: throw it against the refrigerator. Simply scoop a single noodle out of the pot and toss it lightly against the refrigerator door. If it sticks, the pasta should be perfectly cooked. If not, then you know it needs a little more time.
