Ditch your diet soda addiction
editor
I'm addicted to Diet Coke. I love the taste, the lack of calories and how it satisfies a serious 11 am void that no coffee or food can fill. Every time I crack a can, I feel joy but also a sense of "Ick!" What the &^%* am I putting into my body? I heard my co-worker mention that among other things, Diet Coke will "pickle your innards." Fantastic. What's worse? Studies are now showing that
Diet Coke can actually make you gain weight. I'm finally determined to nip this habit in the bud, but it's not easy with Yahoo! free soda vendors in every kitchenette. Oy!
Hungry Girl just posted a blog entitled:
4 Ways to ditch your diet soda dependancy. She suggests:
1. Stevia Sweetened Soda
2. Metromint Water
3. Zenergize Vitamin Infused Drink Tabs
4. POM Light Tea [
-HungryGirl]I've also heard that seltzer is a great replacement. It has a similar burn (diet coke addicts know what I'm talking about here) but doesn't pickle your innards;)
Are you addicted to DC? Have you kicked the habit? Share your diet-soda-ditching devices or professions of love. It's a tough one and we are all in this together.

I had a vicious diet soda addiction, especially Coke Zero and Diet Dr. Pepper. I got completely off all soda about a month ago. It took about two weeks from start to zero, because I really *needed* that caffeine, and I cut down gradually. It was part of a getting-my-nutrition-in-order drive, getting rid of fizzies! I drink generic Crystal Light all day (I don't like water, so this is my substitute), and I have also been making that progressively more water and less drink mix. I kept my one cup of coffee in the morning (to keep my sanity), and I'm feeling good and looking less haggard. Also, my insomnia is much better! I also lost weight, but that's most likely because of the nutrition as a whole.

I have a serious Diet Pepsi addiction. It actually started with Diet Coke and then progress to full blown Diet Pepsi addiction. I started having serious issues with acid reflux but I just cant stop!!! I drink it in the morning like it was coffee and all throughout the day. I do stop drinking it at about 9:00 pm, ya know, so I can go to sleep. And then from 9 to midnight I try to drink a whole days worth of water right before I go to bed. What can I do???? I got to have it!!!!

Thankfully I haven't been addicted to regular or diet soda. Sweet drinks just do not quench my thirst at all. But I know how hard it can be to take it completely out of your diet when there are machines in the break room and stressful days that just beg for a coke or mountain dew. The theory behind diet sodas making you gain weight is mainly because you tend to crave more sweet things. I try to drink tea or water instead, and if I want something sweet I go for the juice.

So someone told you that coke will pickle your insides. Is that really a valid reason to write an article? Are there any facts to back this up? Call me crazy but I'm not breaking my addiction because your friend is misinformed.

Diet soda is in fact very bad for you. It contains Aspertame and that is a horrible ingredient! I do know someone who was "addicted" to diet coke and doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with her. Her best friend read an article talking about diet soda and the effect it takes on a body. She told the sick lady, and she stopped drinking her diet coke. If she didn't she would have died! TRUE STORY! Avoid diet soda, unless you have diabetes, then try Diet Rite soda. Chewing gum also contains Aspertame!

I too was addicted to diet coke. I honestly think it is mind over matter. I just quit cold turkey over 2 years ago. Yes I had horrible headaches for the first week or so.....but now I no longer have a taste for it....actually a dislike. I will have sprite or 7-up in a mix drink but that is only occassionally. If you want to give it up....you will! Good luck

I just wanted to say, that I do agree a diet soda is bad for you if you drink like 12 a day... but an occasional one isn't going to hurt you. As for Metromint water, wasn't there just a warning against this stuff causing sickness and bowel problems?
Maybe none of this is any good for anyone, I think more tests and studies need to be considered before anyone can form a judgement against any product.
