Ditch your diet soda addiction
editor
I'm addicted to Diet Coke. I love the taste, the lack of calories and how it satisfies a serious 11 am void that no coffee or food can fill. Every time I crack a can, I feel joy but also a sense of "Ick!" What the &^%* am I putting into my body? I heard my co-worker mention that among other things, Diet Coke will "pickle your innards." Fantastic. What's worse? Studies are now showing that
Diet Coke can actually make you gain weight. I'm finally determined to nip this habit in the bud, but it's not easy with Yahoo! free soda vendors in every kitchenette. Oy!
Hungry Girl just posted a blog entitled:
4 Ways to ditch your diet soda dependancy. She suggests:
1. Stevia Sweetened Soda
2. Metromint Water
3. Zenergize Vitamin Infused Drink Tabs
4. POM Light Tea [
-HungryGirl]I've also heard that seltzer is a great replacement. It has a similar burn (diet coke addicts know what I'm talking about here) but doesn't pickle your innards;)
Are you addicted to DC? Have you kicked the habit? Share your diet-soda-ditching devices or professions of love. It's a tough one and we are all in this together.

I really have to disagree. Like Tony OFF said: diet soda is only bad for you if you fool yourself into thinking that by drinking a no-cal drink, you can eat more. No!!!! You still have to manage all caloric intake and by taking out calories you drink does not give you a green light to eat all the junk you want! I couldn't stand the taste of diet soda but I switched nonetheless. So while still managing the other calories I take in but not having to worry about what I drink, I manage to stay healthy. Of course more than like 2 a day and I start feeling gross.

Hey, thanks for all of the great suggestions! The pickling of the innards was a joke, I'm sure, but it did remind me that it may be time to kick the can. I've had none today and it's 9:49 PST so let's see how it goes. I usually only clock in at 1-3/day but I think it's time for 0-1. Let me know how the other quitters are doing!

If you're trying to kick the Diet Soda habbit... try drinking Sparkling Water of some kind... it's carbonated so it has the "bubbles" and you can usually find them in some great "fruit" flavors (I really like Mandarine Orange and Strawberry)! It has no calories, no fat, no sodium... and NO SUGAR... plus your getting in your much needed water for the day! I hope this helps you out!

I loved my Coke Zero, but there have been studies that say that Coke (Diet or not) weakens your bones by leaching calcium out. I have also heard that it can cause some people to have a general achyness. I used to limit myself to one a day, but the last two or three weeks, I have had only two. My new rule is that I can only drink it if I have take-out pizza and not with any leftovers. I have noticed that I am no longer achy all over. I have had headaches, but I think that is related to other things.

I really need to quit, badly! I love it though. It fills me up quicker, so I eat less and it always satisfies my cravings. Why is it that everything that tastes so good is so bad for you?? I hate that!

I looked at my mom and dad getting fat and my grandparents getting ill, and looked at the things they all ate and looked at what I was doing and decided where I DIDN'T want to go.
Look at your parents.
Look at your grandparents.
Look at the drugs they take.
Look at where you're going.
STOP!
It's okay to make sacrifices of the everyday 'consumer' pleasures such as liquid candy and fast food. In fact, given the looming meltdown of the health industry (Thank God for that!!) losing the fizzy soda water and sugar-flavor craving may be the best healthcare in the world.
I stopped years ago drinking the fizzy stuff, let my palate adjust to more flavors than sweet and have dropped 20 lbs - and get this - WITHOUT TRYING!
That alone is enough to get my attention!
If I can do this, anyone can, 'cos I'm bone lazy.
Deb.

You would have to drink gallons a day of diet pop(that's what we Michiganders and/or midwesterners call soda) to have any bad effects on the body. A 12 oz can or half liter bottle a day won't hurt you. Let's stop pushing "the panic button".

Interesting to me was a comment made by cah8158 stating that he or she no longer is achy all over. I had never heard that diet soda can cause general achyness. I am now wondering if maybe that's where some of my general aches and pains are coming from. It's difficult to pinpoint because I am about three weeks into a modified and more intense fitness program but I'm not sore the day after I work out. The pains are different and I've been working out long enough to know the type of "workout soreness" and random miscellaneous aches and pains. I only consume 1 can of Diet Coke on average daily and in fact today, I didn't even have any because I was working out and busy with other things. Has anyone else heard about the connection of diet sodas to miscellaneous aches and pains??
