Five Cookbook Picks for Delicious Vegan Eating

These days I find myself eating vegan at most meals, albeit unintentionally. Maybe it has something to do with my delving into some really good vegan cookbooks? Here are five recent publications (and featured recipes) that may  interest you:

Vegan Brunch by Isa Chandra Moskowitz (Da Capo Books)
Disclaimer: I love brunch so I was already partial to the subject matter. This book is full of sweet and savory recipes such as Curried Cauliflower Frittata and Lemon Cashew-Stuffed Crepes with Whole Berry Sauce, ensuring that brunch, or any other meal, will be really satisfying.

Recipes to try:
Pierogi
Gluten-Free Buckwheat Pancakes
Navy Bean Gravy

Short-Cut Vegan by Lorna Sass (William Morrow)
This re-issue of Short-Cut Vegetarian presents a more focused look at short-cut vegan cooking. Helpful tips for making vegan dishes less time-consuming are strewn throughout the book. Making Butternut Squash Soup with Herbes de Provence? "After the initial sauté, cook all the ingredients in a pressure cooker for 4 minutes under high pressure." Sass knows that even vegans lead busy lives!

Recipes to try:
Jerusalem Chickpea Sandwich Filling
Arame-Flecked Asian Couscous
Bean-Creamed Spinach
Lemon-Tahini Sauce

The Vegan Table
by Colleen Patrick-Goudreau (Fair Winds Press)
On the fence about a vegan diet? Then this book is for you. A proponent of eating whole foods, Patrick-Goudreau's collection of recipes prove that a lot of foods you may have been eating are indeed vegan. An unconscious vegan! There are new takes on more non-vegan dishes such as Matzoh Ball Soup and Cashew Sour Cream that ought to add to your vegan adventures. An added plus: It is noted if recipes are free of oil, wheat, and soy.

Recipes to try:
Mushroom Pecan Burgers
Tempeh and Eggplant Pot Pies -Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies
Beet Bundt Cake

And while perhaps not necessarily intentional, many raw foodists do eat vegan. Here are two cookbooks focusing on eating raw:

Ani's Raw Food Desserts by Ani Phyo (Da Capo Books)
Who said "raw" was passé? Phyo's second book (the first was Ani's Raw Food Kitchen) focuses on the sweeter side of raw with 85 recipes (Almond Frangipane Kream and Raspberry Ganache Fudge Cake, anyone?) that will have your sweet tooth clamoring for more.

Recipes to try:
Lemon Pudding Filled Coconut Cupcakes with Shaved Coconut Topping
Lavender Chocolate Bars
Blueberry Muffins with Lemon Blackberry Glaze

Living Raw Food by Sarma Melngailis (William Morrow)
Remember that episode of "Sex and the City" in which Samantha goes to a raw food restaurant? That was Melngailis's Pure Food and Wine. This follow-up to Raw Food/Real World further demonstrates that raw cooking is still en vouge and if there's a sexy representative for it, Melnagilis is it.

Recipes to try:
Morning Sun (has honey so it's not vegan!)
Beet Ravioli with Pine Nut "Goat Cheese"
Chocolate-Coconut Truffles

They sound good! I avoid most meat and also milk (dairy is the only food that is proven to make a lot of people break out), so I'll check these out.
