Well, shortly after I quit came all the news about our crippled economy. And also we did our taxes wrong a few years back and owe some money to our friends the IRS. So, now I feel like a total dummy. Now, before you give me any "what did you expect" flack, my husband and I are doing fine financially, we can afford to live on what he makes and a freelance gig from me now and again, we just can't life *quite* as comfortably as we did before.
Anyway, I've tightened a bunch of stuff in our budget, and one thing I'm doing is keeping and eating leftovers. I've always kept them out of the guilt instilled in me as a child that other kids are starving out there somewhere, but I must confess I rarely ate them, even when I was dirt poor in college.
I have several questions about leftovers for my fellow Shine gals:
What foods work best as leftovers? I've noticed some foods work well (almost too well, tasting better than they did when freshly made) and some are complete duds. What are your tried and true leftover goods? What just does not work for you?
What are the best containers for storing leftovers? Sometimes my admittedly cheap dishes from Ikea allow the fridge smell to soak into the food or just allow a staleness to creep in. What particular brands/styles have you had luck with?
And how do you prevent the dishwasher crust from getting on your dishes? Any certain brand of dishwasher detergent you're using? Is that a total lost cause?

Report AbuseI like to use leftover meat and veggies from tacos, kebabs, fajitas, etc. as a topping for my lunch salads. I do this almost everyday. Just heat up the meat and veggies separately and throw on a bed of lettuce and fresh veggies. I often use leftover salsa as a dressing, straight up or mixed with whatever creamy dressing I have in the fridge. This works for chili and bean dip, too.

Report AbuseLasagna makes good leftovers because I think its one of those dishes you mentioned that taste better on the second and third (if it lasts that long) day. Chicken and turkey are good also; you can cook a whole one, then use the rest for so many other dishes: sandwiches, salads, soups, etc.
I am all about Gladware, the containers that you can throw away if you need to. I get them from WalMart, as they tend to be a bit cheaper there than the grocery store, and it seems like they're very good at protecting the food. They even make plastic bakeware that you can use to cook right in the oven (on a cookie sheet), and they come with lids, so you can just store them right from the oven.
For the dishes, I use the Electrasol (I think it's called Finish now) 3-in-1 powertabs, those seem to work the best on my dishes.
