Mad Men Dinner Party Primer

 The stylish, sexy and addicting new season of Mad Men, the Emmy-Winning series about the tumultuous world of advertising in the 1960s, returns to AMC on Aug 16th. The Matthew Weiner created series seems to have sparked renewed interest in the ‘60s and its famous retro recipes.

I came across Mad Men three years ago and instantly fell in love with the world of the Sterling Cooper ad agency. I was particularly interested in the storyline of Betty Draper, the wife of successful adman Don Draper, and the foods she would eat and serve to her family. From her “around the world” party she threw for Don’s Heineken account in the season 2 episode “A Night to Remember”, to romantic evenings out with Don, Betty always manages to whip up — or order — one heck of a meal.

In anticipation of season three, and in channeling our inner Betty Draper, why not throw a Mad Men dinner party with some of Taste of Home’s classic ‘60s-inspired recipes?

For appetizers, serve finger foods that can be eaten while allowing guests to mingle. Try a Mrs. Draper favorite: Shrimp Cocktail or Rumaki — also known as Bacon-Wrapped Scallops — which Betty served to her “around the world” party guests. The main course should feature a classic such as Beef Wellington, with creamed spinach and roasted potatoes. Finish the meal with a Baked Alaska or Pineapple Upside Down Cake.

Betty always makes sure her guests have a drink in hand. Create a wet bar and be sure to keep it stocked with Heineken and plenty of mixers. Some cocktails to serve: martinis, Tom Collins, Mint Julep and an Old Fashioned.

Bacon-Wrapped Scallops

Ingredients:

    * 20 fresh baby spinach leaves
    * 10 uncooked sea scallops, halved
    * 10 bacon strips, halved widthwise
    * Lemon Wedges

Directions:
Fold a spinach leaf around each scallop half. Wrap bacon over spinach and secure with a toothpick. Place on baking sheet or broiler pan.
    Broil 3-4 in. from the heat for 6 minutes on each side or until bacon is crisp. Remove toothpick. Squeeze lemon over each. Serve immediately. Yield: 20 appetizers.

    Sounds like a classic idea. I made beef wellington a long time ago for my husband. I think it is time to try it again. Creamed spinach is a favorite of mine as well. Thanks for the ideas.
