Ode to the Supermarket Bakery

For one mom, the supermarket is her Disneyland.

Recession Mama
: O supermarket bakery, how I love thee! Your gorgeous, big, New York-style bagels, six for $1.99, your glistening fruit tarts for under $10, and a cake shaped like a cheeseburger, just for fun ...

I remember when I was a kid, getting a cake from the supermarket bakery was kind of embarrassing. Like using coupons and getting a "doggie bag" in restaurants (which actually had a picture of a dog on it). My mom did all those things anyway -- and I'm none the worse for it. In fact, it made me appreciate the convenience and value of the supermarket bakery.

Some years ago, Albertson's grocery ran a set of commercials where a tearful bride described some horror of a wedding cake that had been delivered from a fancy bakery, and how Albertson's fixed it. Around that time, I noticed that the selection at the larger supermarket bakery counters was really great -- doughnuts, delicate pastries, chocolate-covered strawberries, and cakes of every size.

We have a really large summer party every year, and I need a cake for about 80 people. A few years back, the kids decided they wanted the cake to be completely covered in fruit. I went to a popular local bakery and explained that I would like a full sheet cake, completely covered in fruit. They told me it would be $150. I called around and got about the same price at other bakeries. While grocery shopping the next day, I spoke to the woman at the bakery counter, and she told me it would be just their regular charge for the full sheet ($49) -- no more for the fruit or extra labor. I had plenty of choices of cake, fillings, and frostings. On the big day, the cake looked and tasted fantastic -- and the number of comments we got were astounding. We've never looked back ...

There are only 2 "real" bakeries where I live, so the supermarket bakeries are really the only economical choice. I wanted to check out the newest bakeshop and give them business if the products were good, but the prices were SO high, I only made one trip. The other shop has been around for years, but their location is out of my way and I just never think to go there.

Hate to give all my business to Wal Mart but they just can't be beat on the prices, and the quality is really good.

I don't really consider this a "recession find." But that may be because I've ALWAYS used my supermarket's bakery. I used Bi-Lo for my WEDDING CAKE. And it was beautiful. 3 tierd cake (the cake was marble, with a buttercream frosting), dozens of pink and red roses all over it, even had a little fountain in the middle. And that's just one example. I've used it for other occasions as well.

When I was in high school and collage I worked in a supermarket bakery - made everything from birthday cakes to wedding cakes. We fried our own donuts and had specialty bread delivered daily in addition to the selection we baked on site. A whole case of cookies, cupcakes, and special occasion cake and displays of packaged muffins, rolls, danish and other fun stuff sat out on the grocery floor. We were always busy! Our town hasn't had a "real" bakery in so many years that everyone shopped at our bakery. Now it's just the more affordable way to go. I've always been a fan of supermarket counters - the deli, fish counter and a new addition of a sushi counter! Love it! Best way get the most for your dollar!

Yay for Raley's &/or Safeway Bakeries!!! I get all of my kids birthday cakes there & they are always well received & highly complimented! We like to get the cupcake cakes in the shape of whatever the birthday boy's party theme is. Next one up is a Dinosaur theme, which means a half sheet of cupcake cake designed to look like a jungle complete with little plastic dinosaurs! Only $35! : D

Albertson's has beautiful cakes. I used to buy them all the time for birthdays at work. The NY Bagels, too.

I'm sad that I've developed some sort of allergy and can no longer eat their baked goods.

And Jenn, I'm being catty, but I believe you must have gone to college, not "collage"!
