PIZZA FUN-DESAL

Here's a quick fix pizza-style pandesal that is great for summer snacks (or midnite snacks!)

Pan de Sal (home-baked is preferred), split in halves

sliced red and green bell peppers (optional)

Variety of Meats (sliced-diagonally hotdogs, pepperoni, sliced sweet ham, sliced spam or luncheon meat)

2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Easy Pizza-Style Sauce:

2 tablespoons vegetable oil or butter

1 small onion, chopped

1 teaspoon minced garlic

1 3/4 cups store-bought pasta or spaghetti sauce

1/4 cup banana catsup

1 teaspoon dried oregano or Italian seasoning

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 teaspoon Maggi liquid seasoning

Preheat oven to 350 F.

To make the sauce:

Saute chopped onion and minced garlic in oil or butter. Add the rest of sauce ingredients and let simmer until heated through.

To assemble pizza:

Spread about 1 or 2 tablespoons of pizza-style sauce on split side of pandesal. Arrange bell peppers and meats on top of sauce. Place on baking sheets. Combine the cheeses; sprinkle over meat/bell pepper toppings. Bake for 5 to 10 minutes or until the cheeses melt.

Variation:

1) Mexican-style pizza - use chunky salsa instead of pasta/spaghetti sauce and may add drained sweet corn kernels to toppings.

2) Sloppy Joe pizza - brown 1/2 lb ground beef and drain. Then combine with other sauce ingredients. Add 1 coarsely grated carrot.
