Poutine - comfort food or express-train to high calories ? You decide.
Poutine - French fries comfort food
Taken at IN CASA Restaurant, Taichung City, TaiwanNot
your usual French fries but French fries topped with fresh cheese
curds, covered with brown BBQ chicken gravy and sometimes other
additional ingredients.
Also known as
Poutine,
the freshness of the curds is important as it makes them soft in the
warm fries, without completely melting. I read that this is a Canadian
comfort food, especially but not exclusively in Quebec. Is that true,
Canadians there?

Mmm...j'aime beaucoup le poutine.
I'd say it's less a general Canadian comfort food than a specifically French-Canadian one, so yes, primarily in and around Quebec. And it is indeed delicious. In moderation, of course.

I had it on vacation and it was so good!! We ate at a place in Quebec City and it came with chicken and peas on it, too. My husband didn't go for it, but the rest of the time I was in Quebec I had it every day. And I saw plenty of other people eating it, too. Basically, it is a main dish, not so much a side dish.

Everybody in Canada likes Poutine. Those of us who are from Detroit (just a few minutes from Windsor) like it, too.

This Wisconsin cheesehead stops in Matawa, Ontario every year on her way to Vermont for the poutine. It's just a great summer vacation treat, the community as well as the food!
