Quick & Easy Ways to Jazz Up Oatmeal

By Bethenny Frankel

Cereal can be a great investment, that is if you choose the right cereal. Oatmeal, for instance—is a cereal superstar—nutrient-dense, filling and full of fiber. It is also a great canvas for other flavors like cinnamon, maple syrup or vanilla extract—and perfect for colorful fruits like strawberries, blueberies or cherries, either fresh or dried. Packets of oatmeal that are sweetened are not the best investment, because they contain so much sugar and are processed. Ideally, choose plain, natural oatmeal, which is still very quick and easy to make at home. Regular rolled oats are good, but natural steel-cut oats are even better. The following steps will help you "jazz up" steel-cut oatmeal.

Things You'll Need:
1.5 cups Water
1 cup steel-cut oats
1/2 cup milk (soy, lowfat or regular)
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
3 tbsp. sugar
1/2 cup dried blueberries
Slivered almonds (optional)

Step 1
Bring the water to a boil.

Step 2
Add the oats and bring to a simmer.

Step 3
Add in the milk, cinnamon, sugar and blueberries. Cover and cook until your desired consistency (can be thick or thin).

Step 4
Bowl and top with slivered almonds (if you like) and sprinkle with sugar.

i like to use a little bit of milk, honey, and peanut butter! the peanut butter helps you stay full longer, and if you want to go healthy with the peanut butter, use organic! it adds a nice crunch.

I cannot stand eating cooked oatmeal - short on the gag relex list for me. So...

I mix 1 cup of oatmeal with 1/4 blueberries and 8 oz. of FAT-FREE yogurt (60 calories) for a low-fat and healthy start to my day.
