This turkey burger gets its name from using jalapeno peppers and salsa to give it zing. These burgers combine ground turkey with pork sausage for another layer of flavor. The ground pork adds juiciness and flavor to these turkey burgers. When using jalapeno peppers, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly or use kitchen gloves to protect yourself.

ingredients

  • 1 tomato, chopped (1 cup)
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup seeded and finely chopped fresh jalapeno peppers (2)*
  • 1/4 cup bottled salsa
  • 1-1/2 lb. uncooked ground turkey
  • 1/2 lb. bulk pork sausage
  • 2 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cumin
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. ground black pepper
  • 6 hamburger buns, split and toasted, if desired

directions

  1. For the salsa topping, in a small bowl combine tomato, 1/4 cup of the chopped onions, jalapenos, and bottled salsa. Cover and chill until serving time.
  2. For the burgers, in a large bowl combine turkey, pork sausage, remaining 3/4 cup onions, Worcestershire sauce, cumin, salt, and pepper. Shape burger mixture in six 3/4-inch-thick patties.
  3. For charcoal grill place patties on rack of uncovered grill directly over medium coals. Grill for 14 to 18 minutes or until an instant-read thermometer inserted in patties registers 160 degrees F, turning once halfway through grilling. For gas grill preheat grill. Reduce heat to medium. Place patties on grill rack over heat. Cover; grill as above. Top burgers with salsa mixture. Makes 6 servings.
  4. *Note: Hot chile peppers contain volatile oils that can burn skin and eyes. Wear plastic or rubber gloves and avoid direct contact with chiles as much as possible. If your bare hands touch peppers, wash your hands well.

Really good. I replace the pork sausage with a mild chicken sausage from whole foods and used a seeded serrano chile instead. They tasted really good and this made them mild enough for my kids and lean enough for my diet. Especially if you use the 80 calorie buns and serve with a fresh green salad and your favorite low-fat dressing. The salsa keeps the calorie value down as well! Thanks for the recipe!

Pork sausage could be a lot of things, breakfast, Italian, American, smoked, unsmoked, etc So what is the sausage that is called for in this recipe? It sounded great, but it could be a disaster with the wrong sausage. A friend of mine, a long time ago, invited us over for spaghetti and sausages and used breakfast sausage. Not a great a experience. So what's the deal with this recipe, I'd like to try it.

Paul U - you needed to read the recipe a little closer. Bulk pork sausage is ground sausage - either bulk sausage at the grocery store or something like Jimmy Dean's pork sausage in the tube. Hope this helps you.

WHY WHY WHY would you ruin a turkey burger by putting sausage in it? You just made it as bad as a beef burger:(
