Serving Dish: Eating at the Democratic National Convention

I am here in Denver at the Democratic National Convention, and I am hungry. Because while there are plenty of events, and there is plenty of walking, and plenty of activists and journalists and politicians, there isn't plenty of time to stop and grab a bite to eat.

In fact, when I arrived on Tuesday, I was pretty psyched to have a granola bar stashed in my handbag-I devoured it during the Women's Caucus (which was very exciting, I have to say; Lindsey Palmer, the editor who's been writing all of our in-magazine "What We Share" features, blogged about it here). And while I didn't expect much in the way of fine cuisine when we trekked over to the Pepsi Center later that night to use our press passes to get into the convention proceedings, I did have happily in mind those rumorsfrom a few weeks ago that the convention vendors and caterers would be providing locally-grown, vegetable-laden, healthy meals for the hordes that descended on Denver.

I was misinformed.

In fact, what I learned is that convention food is the exact same food you'd get at, oh, say, a Nuggetsgame. It's stadium food! Hot dogs and pretzels and pizza. Sigh. So I dragged my hungry self over to the DiGiorno pizza counter and ordered an overpriced, not-so-great individual pie. And scarfed that sucker down.

Lindsey had brought the leftover half a sandwich she'd ordered in to the hotel room the night before. It looked pretty tasty. And it was only later, as we walked around and around the perimeter of the arena trying to find an entrance inside that wasn't full to capacity, that I spotted a cheesesteak stand-and yes, they had chicken cheesesteaks on the menu. Mmm, my favorite! Guess where we are headed tonight?
