Should cell phones be banned in Restaurants?

I say definently YES! Cell phones should be left behind in the car, back at home or if you cant live without it, and you feel you have to carry your cell phone with you at all times, then by all means bring it with you, but shut it off please!

There is nothing more irritating and annoying than someone's cell phone ringing or dinging with the most annoying jingle you ever heard, or the most annoying song you have ever heard, and sometimes it's one of those new gangster rap songs that's talking about their baby's moma getting beat, killing someone , selling drugs and other thing's I will not mention.

Who wants to hear terrible annoying things like that when there trying to sit down to a nice meal alone in peace or with the family or friends, I for one, and I am sure not the only one that doesn't want that to happen, it's happened to me several times in the restaurant.

First you hear the annoying sound that even you yourself have came to leave behind ,next you hear them saying "hello?" and did you ever notice how loud they will talk? what wrong with the other person that called them, Are they deaf? why do people alway's yell when their talking on their cell phones? They talk like their the only ones in the room! No courtesy to go outside and talk or quietly ask the caller to call them back later, just plain rude is what it is, and all of this is happening while your trying to enjoy your time away from home and enjoy your meal.

Some establishments have even went so far as to ban cell phones or have a sign posted on the wall or the door as you come in that asks if you brought your cell phone with you to please turn it off while your there, and guess what? I've still seen people's cell phones ring, them answer and talk on them as usual without any consideration to the sign or the people around them.
So in this question and debate of should cell phones be banned in restaurants? My vote and opinion on this subject is definently YES! By all means! Cell phones are nice to have, especially in the case of an emergency but theres a time and a place to have them and use them, and in my opinion a restraurant where you go to relax and eat and visit with friends to get a way from the hustle and bustle of the outside world,is just not the place to bring them.

cell phones are a great way to communicate when you are not home, but there are places and times for them to be used and there are some people that own them that need to learn the right and proper ways to do so.

I think it is better to teach people good manners and think of not-only-themselves... So, this question (and not only this) would never be raised.

You are not endangering anyone by using a cell, unlike if you were using one while driving. I think that restaurants banning cells would not be a good idea. What if you are waiting for someone to meet you and you can't speak on your phone? There are too many situations where a phone may be necessary... we need to teach etiquette, not try and ban their use.

I don't think they should ban the use altogether, but there should definitely be limits. Some people might be talking to the person they will be meeting and trying to describe how to get there. But if they are on for longer than 10 minutes, the staff should be able to ask them to either turn it off or leave.

I understand the need to use your cell phone, while eating. You may be waiting for a friends and they are lost or the sitter may call with an emergency.

BUT, before cell phones, when eating at home would you think to sit on the phone while eating your meal, NO. You would politely excuse yourself to the next room and/or make the call as short as possible.

THERE IS NO NEED FOR ANYONE TO SIT AT A TABLE IN A RESTAURANT FOR MORE THAN A COUPLE MINUTES ON THE PHONE

...i HATE CELL PHONES...i never ever answer mine if im with someone else...i always ignore let it go to voice mail and call back when im at home...like all of us used to when we had to actually check our answering machines...i was taking an order at work the other day and as i was trying to find out what kind of salad dressing this woman wanted with her salad she leaned forward accidentally hanging up her phone in the process...she freaks out dials the number back...her friend leans in to figure out whats wrong with the phone...now two people at this table are completely distracted...calling someone back...and im left standing there notepad in hand waiting and waiting for this womans dressing order...the rest of her party was stuck waiting as well...ive walked away from numerous tables before because of peoples bad cell phone behavior...i would have done so with this woman had i not already been in the middle of taking her order...

In some restaurants here in SF, they are unofficially banned. The owners take advantage of the "we can refuse to serve anyone" rule. It's funny, no one would ever allow someone to have a very loud conversation with their dinner companion, and talking on their phone is essentially the same thing. If someone's quiet and it's actually an emergency, then I don't care. But when they are loud and the conversation is something like, "Yo, sh**head!!! I'm just out with my girl!!" then I get really irritated. Go outside, or ignore the call and return it later. I think these people get night sweats over what people did before cell phones.

I agree. Going out to eat is a luxury for most people and when your experience get wrecked by someone who has no manners, that aggrevates me.

I was recently out with family and 2 people at the table behind me were on their phones through the whole meal. Why bother going out if you are going to be on the phone the whole time?

I think leaving your phone in the car for 1 hour is not going to cause the world to spin off its axis. When I am out, I always put my phone on silent as a courtsy to others. I think it is rude to the people you are with and to others around you.

I hate, hate, hate cell phones. Yes I have one, but I try not to use too frequently or "obnoxiously"..

They are a convenience, NOT a necessity.

What I dislike even worse than someone shouting in a public place--are the rude people who sit in the bathroom stall and carry on a conversation while they are relieving themselves. Can we say no class? NO home-training. NO couth. It completely disrespects the privacy of others using the restroom..

I did have a comment, but I was caught up in reading peoples' misspellings. What's up with you guys? You read but can't spell? It's just too funny.

    I'm with you, Linda.
