The Best Ice Cream: Häagen Daz

I know, I know...ice cream is bad - but if you are going to commit to being bad, you might as well make it as good as it can be! To that note, I have to say that my absolute favorite treat is ice cream. And of all the ice cream I have tried, Häagen Daz strawberry is the BEST! First of all, Häagen Daz makes excellent an ice cream all around - nice and creamy rich. All of their flavors are good. But their strawberry, yes strawberry, is really a best of breed as far as ice cream goes. This is a big statement from as I am normally a chocolate girl...chocolate ANYTHING! So for me to crown strawberry as the best is a huge statement. I have to admit thought, I recently tried the strawberry gelato from the gelato bar at the new mega Whole Foods and it was comparable. However, it is much more expensive and not that much better to justify the more than 2x cost.

I have to disclose that I am somewhat a purest when it comes to ice cream. I am not a huge fan of having 'stuff' embedded in my ice cream. Chunks of this and that...it distracts from the ice cream. As a result, I have never really gotten into the whole Ben & Jerry's thing or Coldstone Creamery. I am a big fan of consistency and I find that ice cream with 'stuff' is very inconsistent from bite to bite. (although the strawberry ice cream does have strawberries in it, they are nice and soft and easy to break apart to make every bite as good as the next.)

If you are into more chunky ice cream, or for that matter any other ice cream, feel free to post your favorites. Otherwise, check out some of that Häagen Daz strawberry...you will be hooked - whether you are a strawberry ice cream fan or not!

I'm with you on consistency. I don't think you should have to work for your ice cream.

Can't go wrong with strawberry... but have you tried dulce de leche... it's HEAVENLY!

Seems I might be the minority here. Inconsistency gets my vote. A surprise in every bite: cookie dough, heath bars, brownies (c'mon chocolate lover, you know you wouldn't mind a brownie in your Haagen Daz). If you want to pull out all the stops -- Haagen Daz vanilla + Mrs. Richardson's Hot Fudge + brownie bites topper + whip cream. Might not be the inconsistency of Cherry Garcia, but a very scrumptious treat. Yum, yum. Yep -- I said "yum, yum".

For a time, I was totally obsessed with the dulce de leche bars. I just went to the Häagen Daz website and they don't have them anymore!!!!! I am so bummed. This is so wrong. the crackly outer caramel shell encasing a delicious vanilla ice cream center with a surprise strip of rich soft caramel nestled inside. sigh.

I must say though, that my all time classic faves are Baskin-Robbins chocolate chip (the teeny chips are key—no huge chunks, and pralines and cream. Those 2 scoops, a little hot fudge & whipped cream, and I am all set. Bliss.

I happen to LOVE chunks of this and that in my ice cream, particularly chocolate covered anything. My favorite chocolate covered treats buried in ice cream are heath bars and waffle cones. I find these treats provide texture and complexities that compliment the accompanying ice cream.

My favorites are Häagen Daz Caramel Cone and Ben and Jerry's Coffee Heath Bar Crunch. If you like straight sugar go for Ben and Jerry's Creme Brulee.

I have discovered a flavor of HD at my Walgreen's that is available nowhere else in my area (FL). It is Pralines & Cream, and it's heavenly. It's very creamy (of course) and running through it is liquid caramel and chunks of sugar-coated, crunchy pecans - it's delicious and addictive. I hope you other ice cream lovers will try it.
