Awesome news for folks who love a good breakfast like I do: , well balanced breakfasts help people lose weight! YAY! I think the key is probably to be well balanced. Brief summary of the research (which you can check out here: http://www.healthday.com/Article.asp?AID=616671 ) - obese, sedentary women went on either a low-carb low-calorie breakfast diet or what they call a big breakfast diet. The big breakfast diet included protein and whole grain for breakfast, making it the largest meal (calorie wise) of the day. Women on the big breakfast diet lost 40 pounds on average (or about 20 percent of their body weight) compared to the other women, who lost only 9 pounds on average. Excellent news for breakfast lovers! The only real problem, as I see it, is that it is hard to keep those other meals (lunch and dinner) small. That is a challenge, but obviously it can be done.
Also, realistically, it is sometimes hard to have enough time for a big breakfast in the mornings, especially if you are a working mom or a caregiver or really have any other demands on your time. But nonetheless, I think this is good news. So maybe I should go back to eggs and whole wheat toast for brekkies. We'll see. Oh, and also this is indeed a calorie restricted diet, so even with the big breakfast the women were only eating about 1200 calories. Theory being that a big breakfast cuts down on munching later (hmmmmm. . . . )
Also, is it true that the calories fall out of anything your toddler only eats half of, so when I pick off his plate, it's "free"?
Just kidding. I know the answer to that.
