The Soda vs. Pop Debate

When I was a child, my grandparents in Michigan would offer me a "soda-pop".  In Oklahoma the fizzy beverage seemed to be known simply as "pop".  My brother-in-law from Washington, D.C. refers to the drink as "soda", and my husband, who is from Texas, calls it "coke" - as in "What kind of coke would you like?"  "I'll have a Dr. Pepper, thank you".

So ladies, what do YOU call the popular carbonated beverage, and what part of the country or world do you attribute to your preferred cola name?

Growing up in rural MS we said pop. But when we moved to a bigger town, everyone there and eventually said coke. I wonder if saying coke is a Southern thing? Isn't coke a Southern company?

In Florida, it's coke. In Chicago, it's pop.

Either way, I prefer beer. :)

i am from ohio this is my take on it..

pop is from a can or bottle..soda is from a fountain, when my husband and i go get soda's its a polar pop from citgo with lots of ice. i guess i came up with that conclusion b/c of the whole "soda fountian" thing.

In the San Francisco area its all "soda". You rarely hear "pop" and "coke" is just another brand of soda, along with 7-up, dr. pepper, root, beer, etc.

When I lived in Texas it was a "coke". Now I live in the Pacific NW and I hear "soda" and use the term "soda".

I’ve heard the phrase “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” more times than I care to count. But being the science nerd I am, I won’t believe it until I see it—the scientific evidence, that is.
