User post: Pound For Pound

Last week Weight Watchers launched a campaign called Lose For Good. As WW members lose weight, Weight Watchers will donate up to one million dollars to help needy children and families. In the last five months I've lost 47 pounds. And I hope to add a little more to my total after weighing in tomorrow evening. Either way, I'm happy with the success I've had so far, and earlier tonight I decided to measure out 47 pounds of food to donate to those who could use it. In addition to the items pictured above, I will also donate Macaroni and Cheese (because what child doesn't love Mac and Cheese?) and some other non-perishables that weigh as much as the weight I've lost so far (even throwing in a couple extra pounds for tomorrow's weigh-in.) And after placing these items in bags to be delivered tomorrow I have to say, this stuff is heavy! Now I'm not so surprised that I already walk faster without feeling winded! I was carrying so much extra weight. Just imagine how fast I'll zip around when I lose the next 100 pounds! It's was incredible to come to this realization today as I held this food in my arms. I spend a lot of time talking about how far I have to go, but I really have come a long way already. And it feels great to know that as I lose weight through eating well and exercise that I'm gaining strength, balance and speed. I'm so thankful for the things I have in my life, and I know that there are a lot of people around the country worrying about what their next meal will be. And while I may not be able to fix the problems facing our entire nation today, I do want to do my part to make this a safer, healthier place. Starting today, I will donate a pound of food for every pound I lose because the journey should be celebrated just as much as the destination. And I cannot think of a better way to celebrate my accomplishments than feeling the weight of them in my own hands. Great things happen when we begin caring for ourselves and for others so starting today, I plan to "be the change I want to see in the world."

Thats great. Love your idea, love your attitude, it has inspired me. Just one more thing I could add, since you have struggle with loosing weight, and I can tell you are more conscious about health now, how about donating food thats "healthier", you know maybe beans, rice, powder milk, non perishables that will be nutritious?.

I find it ironic that you are donating relatively unhealthy food (M&M's, preservative-heavy mac and cheese, and sugary peanut butter) when you yourself have probably excluded those types of foods from your diet. Although this is a good idea, you would be helping the nation significantly more if you donated more nutritious foods.

    Mariella and Amanda,

You both made excellent points. But I am donating foods based on a list of foods that were requested by the church who is donating it. And I do eat the peanut butter which is Reduced Fat as well as the sugar free syrup. I eat the beans and the veggies as well though I rinse them under water to reduce the sodium first.

The candy and chocolate was requested for a bake sale that the church (where I attend WW meetings) will hold to raise money for jackets, coats and blankets for those less fortunate in NYC.

And lastly, the Macaroni and Cheese was important to me because as children, I think most of us loved Mac & Cheese. And I think every child deserves to have it once in a while even if it doesn't offer particular health benefits.
