Wine Find: Alvear Solera Cream NV, Montilla-Moriles, Spain ($19)

alvear
Think Sherry is for elderly ladies to sip in secret? It may not be your cup o' tea, but a sweet cream sherry on a hot August night just may change your mind. The Alvear is dark, nutty, and raisiny, with just enough sweetness to keep it fresh and not cloying. Psst: Alvear's not actually Sherry, but a Sherry-like wine made from the sweet Pedro Ximenez grape in Spain's Montilla-Moriles D.O. nearby Jerez, where Sherry is produced.

Hot Dish: Tapas

Tapas party by freddy

What's a glass of Sherry without a snack? According to Spanish folklore, it's a glass of Sherry with a fruit fly or two drowning in it. Supposedly the idea of tapas, which means "lid" or "cover" in Spanish, came about because smart drinkers covered their Sherry with slices of bread or ham between sips to protect it from  bugs. These days, smart bartenders have figured out that salty snacks make you thirsty...so you drink more wine and make them more money if you're snacking.

What to serve with Sherry? Any light snack will do, but Spanish food is uniquely suited to tapas. Try Spanish almonds, Manchego cheese, jamon, anchovies, olives, and bread.

Freebie Friday: Flamenco Filigree Necklace

flamenconecklace

This week's giveaway is from wine lover and jewely designer Shannon Conlin. Is it just a coincidence that we're talking about Sherry and flamenco this week and she's got a gorgeous flamenco filigree necklace made from a hand-painted aqua filigree with copper and red coral beads on offer?

Enter to win the flamenco filigree necklace--just visit Shannon's Etsy shop and leave a comment on Vinobite with your favorite piece of jewelry!

Read the contest rules (short version: one entry per person, must be 21 or older and have a U.S. mailing address, enter by midnight Eastern time the following Thursday).

Congratulations to Linda of Tuscon, Arizona, winner of the wine bottle stopper display (Linda actually collects wine bottle stoppers, so Random.org must have sensed the good fit!)

Web find of the week: On the list of things not to do: feed wine to the baby.

PSA: Please drink responsibly, and never drink and drive.
