User post: The 15 Dos and Don'ts of Fast-Food Drive-Thru

We all like to eat fast food once and awhile, and it's defiantly not a bad idea to stop to get a quick something, but there are just some things you don't do when you are at your place of choice.  Then again there are some things you want to do, to ensure not only great product but maybe even something free too!  All the following are if your coming through a fast food Drive-thru.

  1. Never...EVER: Toss back the food through the window.  I've had people do this to me, and let me tell you, not only do i not care if you food is fresh, i might even make sure they use the old stuff to get it out of the shelves.
  2. Do...: If you do have the wrong order and the line is long, pull out and go in.  Say you think you have the wrong order (making sure to not be mad...smile) You'd be surprised by how many free coupons for things you'll get doing this.
  3. Never...EVER: Say "this happens all the time when i come through."  Our thought on the inside "if it happens all the time...why do you keep coming back?"  So we know your lying already trying to get something for free.  Too bad you just lost that.
  4. Do...: If you do happen to have it happen a bit more to you then you'd like.  Come inside...there is a 97% chance you will always get the right food.  That's not to say you won't fall in the 3%.
  5. Never...EVER: Tell the order taker that the others cars were served faster.  (if the place has a double drive-thru or not)  They are not just taking orders, they have to take the money, sometimes even get the food ready and hand it out.  So they are not trying to forget you, it's just not that easy doing 5 to 6 jobs all at once.  They are trying to get you taken care of.
  6. Do...: If it is taking a long time...come inside.  I once had a customer tell me there was 4 car in line, and he came in and left by the time the 3 car was just pulling up to order.  Or if you fell like waiting make sure you know exactly what you want when they do help you, more often then not people will wait like 2 to 3 minutes and when the order taker is ready they haven't even looked at the menu yet...so they have to wait even longer to get everything.
  7. Never...EVER: Not pull forward if they ask you to so they can help the people behind you.  If they are waiting on your food, but the person behind you has there order ready...just pull forward.  When you don't not only do you hold up the line, but at my place we will just run the orders around you.  Then all the other people in line usually honk at you when the get out of line.  Plus it's a rule at my store that you get your food last now.  So just pull forward.
  8.  Do...: Pull forward with a smile.  Even if it takes 5 minutes for them to get you your food.  Think they know how long you've been waiting..and if you smile and say "oh it's ok you guy's are busy"  Boom...there's free coupons.  I usually give out 3 to 4 coupons if they smile and treat me good when i run the food out.  The person running you out your food already thinks your going to yell so surprise them, and they will make it worth your while.
  9. Never...EVER: Tell us how long you've been waiting.  Chances are your lying and we know it.  We have timers on the inside that tell use so don't try making something up to get free food.  There is no DO on this one...just Don't do this.
  10. Do...: If you come through a lot, try to get to know them.  We always treat the regulars 10x better then everyone else.  Plus they get the freshest and best quality.  Plus you never know, you might just make a new friend.
  11. Do...: Call the hotline and tell them how good a store is doing if you have good service.  The hotline contacts the store and lets them know.  The manager lets his crew know, and they get bonuses, so they are more likely to treat every customer good, to try to get more.  More calls, better service.
  12. Never...EVER: Tell them you are missing an item when you are not.  We will ask for the bag back..and if you think your clever by taking it out of the bag first, we know what we put in the bag, and we will get your plate number.  And if you try it again...you'll be getting a call.  Plus at my store we may even come out to your car to "double check the bag".  Odds are the customer says forget it, and then we know you were lying.  No one drives off if they are not lying.
  13. Never...EVER: Ask for a only water.  Most stores will tell you "sorry we don't just give out waters, you must order something too."  If you want water that bad come inside, it's 10 cents, some places it's free.
  14. Do...: Have your money ready, try not to go digging through you car to find a penny if your short.  We don't care about a penny, just give us what you got as long as it is within 5 or so cents.  That's not to say every place will be nice like that.  Some places will penny you if your short.
  15. Lastly...Pick a place that is not busy, or try not to come during peak periods.  Your food will be fast, but the quality is through the gutter.  And sometimes it's just smarter to come in.

To Mrs P , you have ventured out of your crystal palace at least once I take it so you might just have noticed that not all people are as fortunate as yourself and can't actually choose what they do to earn money to survive. We didn't all have the opportunity to attend a higher learning establishment. Believe it or not there are people who aren't elligible for assistance and don't have a parent to hand it to them and guess what most of these people are in the service industry. We are not lesser individuals because we don't have an office job. We were not afforded the luxury of following ones dream to a wonderful career. We work to pay the morgage or rent and to go the grocery store for our families. Occasinally we even have enough money to go to a restaurant &allow someone else to serve us. remember that with privilage comes a price and selfishness is an evil and ugly place to dwell.

WOW... I cannot believe the amount of people degrading others for having a work ethic. Thanks for the info.. I have worked fast food and its a hard, thankless job. But it is a job, so do not degrade the students or the people who have to actually work hard for a minimum wage job... get out of your ivory tower people.. you are no better than any other.

I absolutely respect you as a human being, but if you want me to take your post seriously, please learn to spell and punctuate your sentences appropriately. This post is long, rambling and painful to read because of all the grammatical errors.

Some one should write how to be a better fast food employee.... when a customer says "thank you" Yeah and Yep are not polite or acceptable responses. and, I'm sorry I interrupted your conversation about "how drunk you got last night" with my coffee order. Customers will be rude if you (the employee) are rude. be attentive and polite, it will be a better experience for everyone. (I have 12 years experience in food service/hospitality)

i agree about the editing. This might be a good article, but i literally on several points had to slow down and try to figure out what they were trying to say. Please edit the articles before publishing them, for the English language's sake.

I agree with the posters who say that YOU, the author, needs to work on your own attitude toward customers. We're there as patrons of your business. If you've messed up our order, have some accountability. You're asking me to come inside and meekly say I "think" you messed up our order. No, it's more like: "This order is incorrect. I ordered the ________. Thanks for fixing it." If I were at a sit-down restaurant and ordered a hamburger and you brought me a chicken sandwich, you wouldn't expect me to say "I think this might be wrong." You and I would both know that it was wrong and it would be rushed back to the kitchen.

If you don't want to work in fast-food which a bunch of high-school kids, go to college and get an education. OR, try another sector, such as retail.

Sorry, I know I sounded harsh in the post I just wrote...before I get slammed, I know a job is a job and that not all people have the means to go to college. I just want this author to realize that there are other types of jobs out there where he or she would not have to deal with the food industry. I've met some fast food employees who have been great -- and others wouldn't care if you were the last customer on earth. I guess what I'm saying is that it goes both ways -- the customer isn't always the one who could use some help with fast food etiquette.

100% agree with Mom2One. Life is what you make it, in the US we live in a country that thrives on the ideal of the american dream. The idea that no matter what your circumstances you can achieve to be whatever you want to be. I agree with this because if you want to do something badly enough and have a hunger for it, you will be successful in fulfilling it. Doomerexis, you seem unhappy working at this fast food restaurant so why put up with the long list of problems you have mentioned? You sound young which means you have time to fix your situation if you want to. Complaining often falls on deaf ears, so go and do something which makes you happy, gives you job satisfaction and doesn't drive you to such frustration. We are all capable! Peace Love Light! :)

Unfortunately, many fast food customers are equally as worthless as bad fast food employees. Take some of the hateful b----es in the comments down here that comment about going to college if you don't want to work in fast food, because that's a viable option for a teenager in high school, right?

When I was in high school I had the average McJob, and there would always be fat a-holes coming through trying to score extra free food. My favorite is, "I had wait X minutes for fries at a fast food place?! This is ridiculous". This one was commonly said after some fatass specifically ordered the fries to be dropped fresh, ensuring a 4-5 minute wait anyway. It's not that they're trying to get free food due to the wait, they're trying to goad you into insulting their ridiculousness so the manager will have to give free food to stop them from filing a customer complaint. I'm all done with schooling and I work IT now, which is far better and something I enjoy.

After dealing quick change artists, people trying to score free food through dishonesty and people who are generally acidic and talk down to fast food employees(Not feeling superior to anyone else at home or work? Go talk down to the 16 year old in the drive thru window), don't be surprised or dismayed if that smile looks a little forced.

Just for once I wish all these high and mighty better-than-everyone who has to work for a living people would try putting themselves in someone else's shoes. Some people have to work to get the American dream. Life isn't always a straight path from high school to college to a good paying job sitting on your behinds. I totally agree with the author. If a little common decency and manners are extended to fast food workers then maybe you would have a better experience at these establishments. Try a little understanding and patience and see if maybe you can make someone's day a little better. And just as a footnote, I have an education and an office job, but I'm not above being kind to someone who has to work on their feet all day long and deal with people who see them as beneath them.
