Father's Day is just around the corner, and if you have not yet picked out that perfect gift for dear old Dad, it's time to get moving. If Dad is a foodie then not to worry, Travels in Taste has you covered. Here are a few gift ideas for your foodie hero.
Outdoor Grilling
My own Dad prefers air
conditioned fine dining over outdoor grilling, but if your Dad is a
Bobby Flay wanna-be, consider the Viking 53 inch stainless steel
outdoor grill. With three 25,000 BTU burners, this baby can
really cook. There is also a rotisserie system, a smoker
tray, stainless steel flavor generator plates that generate smoke
from the drippings, electronic ignition and even a
computerized steak flipper that automatically turns your steak when
it has reached the perfect level of doneness. Well actually I
made up the part about the computerized steak flipper, but you get
the idea, this grill does everything. Dad would certainly be
impressed.
Morton's The Cook Book
If you think that
much raw power should not be concentrated in one person's
hands, or if the $5,000 price tag of the mega-Viking is outside
your price range, Viking has smaller versions of its famous
grills. Or you can get Dad the latest cookbook from
Morton's Steak House to help him hone his grilling
technique. The second edition of 'Morton's The
Cook Book' is now in print, with 100 recipes from the
famous steak house. You can buy it on line for $22, or you
can take Dad to your local Morton's for a book signing and
recipe sampling. Tickets are $59 and include a copy of the
book. Check on Morton's web site for locations and
dates.
Wine Lovers
Does your Dad's wine collection rival that of Per Se? Does he go wine shopping on the weekends with Thomas Keller? Then he definitely needs the Bosch 24" wine storage unit. It holds up to 98 bottles of wine in two temperature zones, and it comes in a very sharp looking stainless steel cabinet. Expect to spend about $4,000.
Of course a good bottle of wine is also a nice gift. Melville Winery, featured last week at the weekly wine series at Per Se, is currently offering its 2007 Estate Pinot Noir-Carrie's on line. It can be shipped to Dad in 2 to 5 days and costs $52 per bottle.
Dinner and a Lamborghini
If your Dad likes
fast cars (who doesn't?), take him to Dal Toro for Fathers'
Day. Located in the Palazzo Resort in Las Vegas, Dal
Toro is both fine Italian restaurant and fine Italian sports car
dealership. After a dinner of sautéed Mediterranean sea bass,
or pizza with crab meat and asparagus, walk into the Lamborghini
Super Car Dealership attached to the restaurant. It's $10
to get in, but worth it. There are over 13 cars worth $1
million or more. Maybe he'll buy you one for being so
nice to him on Fathers' Day! (For more about Dal Toro
please click here).
Cook Up a Lobster
Why not cook up some fresh Maine lobster for Dad on Fathers' Day? Nothing says I love you quite like a succulent lobster and fresh drawn butter. And as an added plus, you can tie a silly plastic bib around his neck and take pictures, to get back at him for all those ridiculous baby pictures he showed your friends in high school.
Linda Bean's Perfect Maine ships live Maine lobster overnight direct to your home. Be careful opening the box! Linda Bean's will also ship its creamy lobster stew (frozen), and wild caught raw Maine peeled shrimp.
The cost is $18.75 to $52.95 per lobster depending on size. Cost includes shipping.
Spend Some Time
Fine dining is all about
sharing a special moment with those we care about. Whatever
you do on Fathers' Day, make sure it includes some quality time
around your favorite table, with good food, fine wine, and Dad.
