User post: What Scares Me Most: Food Phobias

I'm scared of mayonnaise. There, I've said it. The smell, the texture, the color... it makes me cringe. Once when I was pregnant with my second child, my husband and I were headed to the park. On the way there, we stopped at Burger King. I ordered the chicken sandwich plain as I normally do and was excited about my little snack. Once we had the bag in the car and pulled away from the drive-thru window, I opened the wrapper and... no, no, no... I freaked out! The sandwich was swimming in mayo. Literally, I started bawling (it could have been pregnancy hormones) and started trembling. I just knew that someone was out to get me by slathering mayonnaise on my chicken sandwich. A speck of the mayo then touched my skin and my body became stiff as a board. The sandwich then fell on the floorboard and was inedible.

There are times in your life you learn never to pull away from the drive-thru without looking in the bag first.

What food phobias do you have?

What's the wackiest thing to happen when you have been faced with your phobia food(s)?

I can't hardly look at the pic I put up...

I think certain foods affect you when you are pregnant. With my son I was grossed out by beef, with my daughter I could'nt eat green beans.Weird.Now, I hate mushrooms, they are so slimey.

My food phobias: mayo, sour cream, cream cheese, cheesecake, milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, or any other kind of cheese. Cheese freaks me out, it is so gross. I can't just scrape it off of something. If any of the above items have touched my food, I can't eat it. Maybe these aren't phobias in the clinical sense of the word, but I'm tellin' ya, I can't go near those foods, or smell them. And if I ever accidentally smell milk that has gone bad again I don't think I'll live to tell about it. That is the absolute worst smell.

Oh yes, I can relate... back in the day when I ate burgers, I ordered a burger from a drive-through with no mayo and no cheese. My burger had both mayo AND cheese! I was STARVING and had already pulled away so I had to go back through the line (late night so only drive-through was open) which was huge because the bars had just closed and everyone wanted some late night food. I was NOT happy!

EeeWww! Mayo, mustard, squid, jelly, shrimp (tastes good-just the texture freaks me out), chunky tomato sauce, chunky soup-all makes my tummy curl.

Eew. I hate mayonnaise too... I don't understand the point. It doesn't taste good and it adds useless sludgy calories. But I'm not afraid of it... I can generally scrape mayonnaise off the burger and then eat it without a problem.

I usually only get squicked out by foods I've thrown up before. Once I taste something on the way back up, it's hard to force another one down, ever.

Case in point: Burger King Steakhouse Shroom and Swiss Burgers (and typing that made my stomach do a backflip.) I used to eat those all the time when I went to BK... then I ate one back in January and came down with an awful stomach flu a few hours later. Never. Ever. Again. Buuuuuuuuuuuh. I can still eat burgers fine, but no more burgers with mushrooms and brown sauce on them.

That, and lingonberry pancakes. Those are my "phobias."

mrscolbert, I understand trying something again just to make sure and then getting sick on it again. Yes... never. ever. again. No mushrooms for me either.

Susan you must be in incredible shape. You have phobias to foods that most get fat eating.....!!! Lucky you.

    My phobia is ground meats........................ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

I have worked in the food industry my whole life. Making ground meat is gross. Also most markets rewrap ground meats with a fresh outer coating when they don't sell in the coolers.

    Oysters..............Phlegm !!!
