What strange and healthy food do you crave?

I haven't always been a big fan of soy. In fact, I avoided it until I agreed to go on a sushi date last year. The guy I went asked if he could take me to the best sushi restaurant in Chicago to try his favorites from the menu. I like sushi but haven't had enough to have favorites, so I agreed to go along with his choices and just be open to the experience.

As much as I loved the salmon rolls, it was the edamame that I couldn't stop thinking about days and even weeks after that restaurant date.

More than a year later, the man from the date is long gone, the sushi restaurant has closed, and I am still craving edamame.

It's weird, I know. It's not like edamame is on par with chocolate-covered pretzels or cookie dough or even creamy mac and cheese. It's not that I enjoy or even eat any other kind of bean. It could be that I often have a hankering for the sea salt I sprinkle on the edamame I now make (very) often at home, or the Parmesan I sometimes grate finely over a bowl of the warm beans. Whatever it is, my edamame addiction has me boiling pots of it late at night when I up working, nibbling on it as a snack, and unashamedly eating bowl after bowl for dinner.

There it is -- my very unexciting, un-junk food, unexplained craving. It's not sexy like sushi. But who knew that being open to spicy tuna rolls would lead me to something plain and simple and so seductive? Who knew that first bowl of edamame would be so strangely satisfying that today, I just can't seem to get enough of my soy love?

Your turn to spill: Do you have a strange craving? Is it (gasp) something healthy?

Jicama. It tastes kinda like a cross between an apple and a raw potato. I eat it raw and I LOVE it.

Sugar snap peas, cucumbers, any bell pepper, tomatoes (with a little salt!), and any fruit basically. :)
