10 Tips for Getting Good Sleep

There’s a lot of advice out there about getting good sleep -- and it's very important. We quickly adjust to being sleep-deprived, and don't notice that we aren't functioning at a normal level, but lack of sleep really affects us. If you're feeling blue or listless, try going to sleep thirty minutes earlier for a week. It can really help.

Here are tips that have helped me get good sleep:

Good habits for good sleep:

1. Exercise most days, even if it’s just to take a walk.

2. No caffeine after 6:00 p.m.

3. An hour before bedtime, avoid doing any kind of work that takes alert thinking. Addressing envelopes—okay. Analyzing an article—nope.

4. Adjust your bedroom temperature to be slightly chilly.

5. Keep your bedroom dark. Studies show that even the tiny light from a digital alarm clock can disrupt a sleep cycle. We have about six devices in our room that glow bright green; it’s like sleeping in a mad scientist’s lab. I have to put a pillow over the cable box.

6. Keep the bedroom as tidy as possible. It’s not restful to fight through chaos into bed.

If sleep won’t come:
7. Breathe deeply and slowly until you can’t stand it anymore.

8. If your mind is racing (you’re planning a trip, a move; you’re worried about a medical diagnosis), write down what’s on your mind. This technique really works for me.

9. Slather yourself with body lotion. This feels good and also, if you’re having trouble sleeping because you’re hot, it cools you down.

10. If your feet are cold, put on socks.

Tony, you are probably not exercising enough. Try for 60 minutes of intense exercise at least 4-5 days a week. Tae-Bo is good, I do that myself sometimes, but lifting weights especially helps fatigue you.

Some of these work for me, but not others. I sleep better when I exercise every day, but only if I do it in the early morning (I get up at 4:30am and hit the gym before work). I can't stand thick layers of lotion though (I feel slithery and greasy), and socks drive me nuts-I must have bare feet.

For me, the most important thing is being cool. I never sleep well during the summer, I need nice cold nights to sleep soundly.

It sounds like your not as tired as you would like to think when you lay down, a few things do not use your bedroom for anything else but sleep & sex, if you lay down and are there for more then 15 min being restless get up go into another room. If your mind is racing take a few hours before bed to have anote book where you can write down things wether it be what you need to do still or how you feel about things. If theres something you can do at home and is really bothering you then do it. When your tired your body will know and then go to bed. Exercise is fine at 30 min a day.. this needs to be done 2 hours or more before you go to bed as well as any eating you do so your body has time to settle down.

i like to take a shower before going to bed. i use a shower gel designed to relax. while in the shower i try to get all of my thoughts out and literally wash the day away. :) i also spray my bedroom with a comforting scent. i only use it at night so that i associate the scent with going to sleep.

What works for me if I can't sleep is reading; it usually tires me out, and I can almost never fall asleep without reading first.

If that doesn't work or if my mind is racing and keeping me awake, I go to my "happy place." I focus on a serene location, for me it's the sight of the Grand Tetons in Wyoming silhouetted against the night sky, and I don't think of anything else. It worked for me last night. :) I first heard about doing that on the radio, and it works because it forces you to stop thinking about what's going on in your life, it replaces your hectic thoughts with a happy and calming one, and those two things together allow you to relax and fall asleep.

Oh, I've also heard that lavender helps. I keep some by my bed in a bowl, but I don't know if it's really helped or not. It's supposed to be a soothing scent that helps with sleep.

The tips in the article are good ones.
