3 surprising fat burning tricks

Exercise makes you happy, healthy, sexy, and, unfortunately—really, really hungry. Back when I had the time to log many workouts every week, I fought constantly not to eat back all the calories I burned. Sometimes I was successful, other times—like the day I came back from a lunchtime power yoga class to find a monster brownie on my desk—not so much. You want to fuel your body when you work out of course, but not with mammoth brownies or seconds of pasta, or giant protein shakes you could swim in. A better idea: Understand the source of your raging appetite. Exercise is believed to trigger the release of a hunger-boosting hormone called ghrelin (it sounds like gremlin for a reason). It’s meant to protect the body from losing too much weight too quickly, but considering most gyms practically have a food court these days, that’s not a danger most of us face. Here’s how I keep the ghrelins at bay:

Snack First, Sweat Later
Twenty minutes later, to be exact. Exercising on an empty stomach lowers blood sugar, which can increase your appetite so you inhale your food later. You can always go for that pre-workout stalwart, a banana, but I’m not a huge fan, so I reach for about 4 ounces of yogurt or another carb-rich snack instead.

Take Preemptive Notes
Writing down everything you consume is a proven way to lose weight, but try this trick: Do it before you eat. Seeing what you’re about to put in your mouth—on paper—gives you instant perspective. Case in point: “Turkey sandwich plus two bags of chips plus a soda plus five of those cookies my co-worker brought it.” Would you eat all that? I think not.

Drink Lots of WaterOn the Rocks
Studies show people who drink water regularly eat 200 fewer calories a day. (Here are some other sneaky tips to get rid of extra calories.) If you make it ice-cold, you may even burn extra calories without trying—researchers in Germany found that drinking six glasses of ice water a day can raise you metabolism by 50 calories. I’ll drink (a whole lotta frigid H20) to that!

What’s your favorite workout snack? How do you keep postworkout hunger under control? Please tell me your tricks!

I don't really have any tricks, I was looking around for some myself! I was wondering if you knew anything about what to drink while working out? I know water is defintely a good thing but a lot of people will drink sports drinks like gatorade or powerade while at the gym. Is it ok to be adding a few extra calories while trying to burn the ones that are already in the body? I've just recently (within the last two weeks) started running on the treadmil everyday and wondered what would be ok to consume while I ran.

I've love to work out, and as Mel, stated I'm also usually looking for easy tips and tricks to burn more calories than what I consume.

I've start my day with a serial or a peanut butter sandwhich, right before I leave home or prior to starting my shift. Then, about 2 hours later have a small snack or a piec of fruit (banana, orange, or some sort of nuts).

For lunch, I will drink plenty of water priorto working out. Throughout my workout, I will drink water every 10 to 15 minutes. Once the work out is complete, I will close with a half of tuna or chicken sandwhich or a small salad, orange juice, vitamin supplements and more water. A pound here, a pound there and its working slowly but surely.

Small but nutritious dinner, is the best part of the day, and it feels very satisfying in the mornig.

    Hi everyone...

I'm used to trying so many tips from many sources how to lose weight. Some worked, some didn't. Some made me miserable, some made me desperate.

But to tell you the truth, only cha-cha dance makes me in shape. I don't lose too much weight, but I get firm muscle, I should go to the tailor to make my clothes smaller. Wanna try? You'll never fail.

I eat dinner before the gym. I'm done for the day. I become quizzy if I eat after that. I drink a ice green tea or water, maybe if I do have a hunger pain a glass of soy milk puts me right to sleep . I'm good for the rest of the night. This works for me

I used to have the same problem of eating too much after working out - BUT, now that is under-control because I discovered that I was OVER-exercising. My trick to avoid over-eating is to avoid over-exercising. I found out I was over-exercising when I bought a heart rate monitor and saw that I was in my cardio zone at a certain point, but was frequently pushing myself beyond that because I didn't think I was doing enough!

Yoga or pilates are great for controlling the over-eating because they usually give you the right amount of exertion and stress relief to burn calories but not leave you starving.

I think it's all about knowing your body and where you are physically - and I HIGHLY recommend working out with a heart rate monitor.

Work out an hour a day, 4 x a week (mixing up your workouts), and try to eat dinner earlier in the evening (5 or 6). Tons of water helps keep you feeling full. I am addicted to eating ice, which is not so good for the chops and is terribly annoying, but it makes me feel like I'm eating instead of just drinking fluids.
