3 surprising fat burning tricks

Exercise makes you happy, healthy, sexy, and, unfortunately—really, really hungry. Back when I had the time to log many workouts every week, I fought constantly not to eat back all the calories I burned. Sometimes I was successful, other times—like the day I came back from a lunchtime power yoga class to find a monster brownie on my desk—not so much. You want to fuel your body when you work out of course, but not with mammoth brownies or seconds of pasta, or giant protein shakes you could swim in. A better idea: Understand the source of your raging appetite. Exercise is believed to trigger the release of a hunger-boosting hormone called ghrelin (it sounds like gremlin for a reason). It’s meant to protect the body from losing too much weight too quickly, but considering most gyms practically have a food court these days, that’s not a danger most of us face. Here’s how I keep the ghrelins at bay:

Snack First, Sweat Later
Twenty minutes later, to be exact. Exercising on an empty stomach lowers blood sugar, which can increase your appetite so you inhale your food later. You can always go for that pre-workout stalwart, a banana, but I’m not a huge fan, so I reach for about 4 ounces of yogurt or another carb-rich snack instead.

Take Preemptive Notes
Writing down everything you consume is a proven way to lose weight, but try this trick: Do it before you eat. Seeing what you’re about to put in your mouth—on paper—gives you instant perspective. Case in point: “Turkey sandwich plus two bags of chips plus a soda plus five of those cookies my co-worker brought it.” Would you eat all that? I think not.

Drink Lots of WaterOn the Rocks
Studies show people who drink water regularly eat 200 fewer calories a day. (Here are some other sneaky tips to get rid of extra calories.) If you make it ice-cold, you may even burn extra calories without trying—researchers in Germany found that drinking six glasses of ice water a day can raise you metabolism by 50 calories. I’ll drink (a whole lotta frigid H20) to that!

What’s your favorite workout snack? How do you keep postworkout hunger under control? Please tell me your tricks!

I work out almost every day so my "pre-work" snacks are pretty much the same snacks I eat every day- fruit, yogurt, almonds, cheese or turkey. I eat usually 6 times a day, just small amounts at one time. I don't get hungry at all during my work out, and sometimes I am not hungry after. I just try to stay as hydrated as possible.

To maintain or lose weight you have to watch the caloric intake, read serving sizes and be honest with yourself. It works, I lost 10 pounds in just a month by working out regularly, eating healthy, and keeping a food diary. It also helps if you have a friend that will keep you on track or comitt to a healthly lifestyle change with you.

    I feel your pain, patsy.

Im under a HUGE amount of stress, thanks to my 16 year old. Im also extremely lonely and isolated. i think exercise helps with stress, but it can also make your workouts tougher. There seems to be a fine line between too much of everything.

Calories in....calories out. Find an activity you enjoy...it will make it easier.

Lots of great posts from everyone. Its a good thing to mix up routine, I agree. Keep the body guessing.

Most people dont know this, but eating an orange before you go to bed boosts ur metabolism while you sleep. This obviously would help before you workout too...haha

I bet patsy's first language isn't english SAS.

if you can find the time ( and stamina) to run ( at any pace good for you) helps a bit. Time yourself aswell, because after you get used to running the same route over and over you will eventually improve your time which gives a great sense of accomplishment. i used to run 7 minute miles best.. now im down to 6.5 minute miles (I'm 16)

not really into weight loss as much as staying fit and healthy during the other seasons. i want to stay in good shape for snowboarding in the winter so i try to run daily.

eating salad for desert instead of desert foods is great too, unless you dislike salad. Same with fruit as long as you limit yourself because we all know fruit is loaded with natural sugars...

but like others said... just find an activity you like doing and stick with it. benchmark yourself so when you see an improvement (other than weight) you get a nice feeling of accomplishment to go along with it.

After a workout I get super hungry so I usually go home open a can of tuna add half a teaspoon of lite mayo and a bowl of iceberg lettuce. It's filling and yummy, well that's if you like tuna.

I usually wake up late and consequently i end up going to the gym about an hour after I eat breakfast so i have a really big bowl of bran cereal which has really good complex carbohydrates that will keep me going all the way through my workout until i can drink my protein shake and have a healthy sandwich

1 glass of water when getting up, 1 orange juice and organic cereal bar 20-30 mn later, and exercice 20 mn later. After exercice, 1 banana and 1-2 glass of water. No exercice after 5 pm. I've done for over two decades and works fine; of course when I can't resist an ice cream or a fat pudding, I double my time of exercice overnight ;))) meat once a week, and fish twice, otherwise, mainly veggies and fruits diet. Combine different sports during the week to work out different muscles and maintain endurance level. No powerbar, magical drinks or any so-called health products except organic foods which tend to provide with more energy and better overall health. Hope it helps.

Normally I eat a banana or something before I got to play a few hours of Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) or In The Groove (ITG) Being that I play on Expert level I can burn a lot a calories very quickly. After a good 3 hours of playing with short brakes every 30 minutes or so I can burn up to 4000 calories. That's right 4000!!! The game has a calorie counter so I am not guessing. The most I have burn was 7000 in 5 straight hours of playing. I know it's the best workout there is because I went from 180 to 145 in 4 months or so once I started playing daily or every other day. Once I stopped playing *no money* I gained all the weight back in about 9 months. So now that I can play again; I am hitting the game back up.
