3 ways to lose weight without dieting

Three ways to drop a dress size and not stress over a single bite

By Hallie Levine Sklar

Great news! You can ditch your diet for good and still hit your happy weight. Science has finally proven what you've probably suspected for years--that following a restrictive food plan can make you more likely to overeat. Researchers at the University of Toronto tempted a group of women who were cutting their calorie intake with a plate of cookies and then put the same treats in front of women who weren't trying to lose. Not only did the dieters dig in, but they ate 66 percent more goodies than their nondieting peers. "Women end up feeling so deprived on weight loss plans that they break down and binge," says Tracy Tylka, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at Ohio State University at Marion. We at SELF have a better way to slim down: nine simple lifestyle switches that will help you shrink your waist effortlessly!

1. Eat more good stuff

Instead of obsessing about tasty bites you want to banish, focus on healthy foods you can feast on. Women who do so tend to lose more weight than those who ruminate on restricting calories. Fill up with fiber-rich fruit, vegetables and whole grains. "High-fiber foods expand in your stomach, so you're less likely to overeat," says Madelyn Fernstrom, Ph.D., director of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Weight Management Center. Fiber also inhibits your body's absorption of fat, says Dave Grotto, R.D., author of 101 Foods That Could Save Your Life (Bantam Books). There are easy ways to sneak in more fiber: Stir 1 tablespoon of flaxseed into oatmeal, add 1/2 cup of beans to a green salad or snack on small portions of dried fruit and nuts. 2. Go to the dogs

Volunteering at the pound could help you lose pounds. People who signed up to walk shelter dogs for an hour a week lost about a pound in four weeks, early research from the University of Missouri at Columbia showed. That's 12 pounds a year you could shed without skipping a single dessert! In fact, other research by study author Rebecca Johnson, Ph.D., revealed that people who walked a dog (either their own or a loaner hound) 20 minutes a day for five days a week lost on average 14 pounds after a year. Best of all, dog walking turns out to be an easy commitment to keep. "We had a 72 percent adherence rate, which is unheard of in most exercise programs," Johnson says. "Some volunteers enjoyed it so much, they stayed longer to walk more animals." Find a shelter near you at PetFinder.com. (Turn your typical walking workout into supercharged steps by adding a few smart strength moves. Walk your way slim!)

3. Sleep it off

Getting enough shut-eye can keep your body from storing fat, scientists at Laval University in Quebec note. Night owls who log fewer than six hours of sleep are 35 percent more likely to gain weight—on average, 11 pounds over six years—than those who get seven to eight. "Sleep deprivation increases cravings for sweets and starches," says James Gangwisch, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. "It also causes your body to produce more of the stress hormone cortisol, which is linked to belly fat." To snag more sack time, set a radio alarm to sound 30 minutes before you want to go to bed, suggests Michael Breus, Ph.D., author of Beauty Sleep (Plume). When it goes off, head to your room and relax with stretches or light reading (avoid anything agitating, such as the news). After a half hour, it's time to dream of a slimmer you.

Note to people with back problems. I solved my back problem 100% since about two years. For two to three minutes, before getting up in the morning, I dig my heels into my bed and do hip push-ups.while laying on my back.

My son moved back home and brought his dog with him. I started walking the dog to help train him and found myself feeling better and all of a sudden eating better. I have lost 20 lbs in 3 months!

I give all the credit to the dog. LOL! Really though it did get me motivated and made exercise more fun. If you don't have a dog, get a rescue animal. Don't spend your money on a pure breed. There are plenty of them out there who could use a good home.

actually, jigity, you can. at least as it applies to excess fat. it all comes down to calories. that has not changed, nor can it. the simple fact is if one "burns" more calories than one consumes, one will lose weight, regardless of the "healthy" nature of the food eaten. first fat then, in the extremes, muscle and organ tissue. if you are referring to overall health, well then yes, by all means eat a diverse diet. however, if one wished to consume 6000 calories of foodstuffs per day, even if they were all sugar and fat and not become obese, one need only burn 4500-5500 calories each day. simple.

I've been hounded about my weight all my life. After 22 years in the millitary you would think I would have a handel on it. Not even close. Now at the age of 61 I have found that if I eat when I should and try to keep snacks down I lose a little at a time. I have given up the hard stuff for diet pop and have lost 35 lbs. over the last year. I love candy, ice cream and about anything not good for me. The one thing I have found most important is if you don't like how you look, change something. If that isn't fast enough for you get up and move. Go as far as you can or one more each time and you will be smilling soon. But if your happy being over weight tell the others tyo go to hell.

Unfortunately for those of us in a wheelchair (and no money for going to a pool or gym) exercise is really not an option. I actually walk my sister's dog using my power wheelchair. At least the dog gets exercise.

I have tried it all and nothing works. Maybe if I didn't have thyroid and pituitary disease and Lupus/RA things might be different. So I eat the best I can, don't binge, don't eat out and live with my obesity. I would love to be thinner but I can honestly say I am a happy person. Life is what you make it. It isn't all about our bodies or longevity.

My dyer caught on fire and I didn't feel safe getting fix so I trash it. I hate laundry mats so I start using my outside cloths line, not only have my gas bill drop, my cloths smell so fresh, the pain in my left arm stop hurting all the time and I notice I was losing weight again and feeling good. I wash all the cloths I could find in the house to wash...Once all was clean I call all my adult children and ask them would they like for me to do their laundry which would save them time and money. So I do their laundry now and since Aug 25th, 2008 until now I've lost around 31 pounds. I was so shock I went to target and try out every scale just to make sure my scale was working right, then I went to my doctor just to make sure, I was well...I doing so well and so fit, she was so happy. So people go green and let the fresh air dry your cloths and get a great workout by doing it.
