4 Ways To Make Yourself Feel Better, Other Than Eat!

0402_jillian-michaels_vg .jpg
I don't know what you do when you're feeling frustrated, bored or upset, but a lot of women eat. Sure, a few cookies now and then aren't going to kill you, but there are so many better ways to take care of yourself! We are always willing to justify eating crap by saying, "I had a rough day. I deserve this." Deserve what? Heart disease? Cellulite? Diabetes? Come on! Would you reward your loved ones this way? I bet not. What do I do to make myself feel better?

1. Whenever I am upset I call my best friend for validation. Just having someone listen allows me to vent and get some of those toxic angry feelings out of my body instead of me stuffing them back down with food.

2. I go visit my horse, because spending time with him calms me down. Don't have a dog, cat, bird, fish, horse, cow, any animal? Go to the park and watch the squirrels!

3. I'll go on line and look for vintage shirts on e-bay, look for something new to get for my motorcycle, or download some new workout music from iTunes.

4. I pamper myself like I would a child--tuck myself into bed and watch my favorite movies!

Now I want you to nurture yourself this way--and I am willing to bet that the more you treat yourself like this the less likely you will be to overeat for emotional reasons. So, the next time you have had a hard day and you are about to order up a pizza, take a breath and ask yourself: What is it that you like to do, need to do? Then stop and try that instead.

I totally agree. There are so many solutions out there, but that first one that always comes to mind is eating. No wonder most people become obese. Stress also triggers this and what's worse, it can become an eating disorder.

absolutely agree, many ways to handle problems in life , try spend time to adoration chapel or church to pray, after that you feel lighter and fresh condtion of being, its true enough, most people dealt depression and stress by hanging their self on fatty and unhealthy food which leads to obesity and diseases.

I understand a young person's concern with image and the impact of gaining pounds. However, a retreat into consumerism and narcissism hardly seem like a better alternative. Whatever happened to the old-fashioned, "count your blessings," or turning your attention away from yourself to someone or something that would benefit from your attention and put life into a healthy perspective. Everyone gets the blues, and sometimes spending money or not having horses or friends can seem to be part of the problem.

    Well said Gwen!

I keep a Gratitude Journal. It's a journal I started two years ago (after leaving my profession and feeling like a pretty serious failure) I made a vow that I would not wallow in self-pity and instead, pick myself up by my broken little boot straps and acknowledge everything I had done and all the people I love and whatever else I could think of to be grateful for. Whenever I got the urge to be a bum, I wrote in my -positve-only journal, listing all the reasons I had to feel blessed in life.

I allow myself to dream and grow in the journal, but I don't allow myself to beg, whine or complain about whatever I feel I am lacking at that moment. It helps me to re-focus my energy in a much more helpful and productive way. :)

if im down, i look at my bible, watch a funny tv show (jackass or something dumb), watch my favorite movies, draw my feelings out, listen to my music, work out(yoga), feed a treat to my dogs (weird, but the feeling of my doing something good for my dogs or someone makes me feel better)or look towards the coast and fantasize about the beach (i especially love to look out during sunset hours!!).

"You are what you eat" is definitely true. Just be sure to drink plenty of water and get adequate sleep and you'll be all set!

I agree with some of these I enjoy spending time with my pets also, and sometimes spending money will help me or playing a violent video game. However for me these things only mask the stress, depression, or whatever it is im going through at the time.

I like the idea of a journal and reminding your self how lucky you are instead of wallowing in self pity. but sometimes its easier said than done.

I was feeling bummed last night so I did what I always do. Toss my husband out of the bedroom for an hour or so, pour a glass of my favorite wine, play norah jones, and light a few candles. I'll even spray a perfume I like around the room for aromatherapy. Do some girly things like paint your nails or give yourself a pedicure and you'll feel beautiful, relaxed, and sleep like a baby so you wake up refreshed. This is especially important if you are living with a guy because it lets you feel feminine and connected with yourself.
