5 Things You Need to Know About Crash Diets

1. Dieting No-Nos

Regardless of how much you want to lose weight and how fast you want that weight loss to occur, you should never put your health at risk by dieting. While some crash diets may help you to detoxify your body and lose weight in the process, others are extremely dangerous. It is best to avoid any diet which restricts your vitamin and mineral intake, for example diets which recommend only one or two types of foods. Diets that limit calories below 1,500 a day or that simply make you feel bad are not a good idea.

2. Drink Your Way to Weight Loss

Juice fasting may have a bad rap, but it is simply because many people do not know how to perform a fast correctly. The truth is that a juice fast can help to detoxify your system and help speed weight loss. To perform a juice fast, consume as much fresh pulp-free fruit and vegetable juice as necessary to satisfy hunger; however, do not fast longer than 7 days without doctor supervision, as your body will need to replenish its protein stores after 7 to 10 days. Don't abuse a juice fast either, limiting the diet to no more than 10 days in a 30-day period.

3. Super Soups and Salads

One of the best crash diets out there simply replaces your regular meals with hearty soups and salads. Healthy soups and salads prepared with a variety of fresh vegetables and whole grains and garnished with low-fat dressings ensure that you body gets all of the vitamins and minerals it needs while eliminating unhealthy fats and aiding in weight loss. Remember that vegetables are far lower in calories, so you may need to eat more than usual to feel satisfied; however, feel confident in your diet as everything you are ingesting is good for your body.

4. Taking Things One Meal at a Time

If you are looking to lose just a few extra pounds, replacing 1 meal a day with a weight loss supplement is a fantastic crash diet. There are a multitude of meal replacement powders and pre-made drinks which are full of vitamins and minerals, supporting your heath during your diet. Remember that for meal replacement to work, you must supplement your daily diet with 2 well rounded and healthy meals.

5. Just Say No to the Yo-Yo

Remember that a crash diet must be performed in a healthy manner to show long-term results. Avoid cutting back too much on calories for any period of time, as it can effect your metabolism and actually cause you to gain weight faster. Consider crash diets as a healthy aid to permanent weight loss, and supplement occasional dieting with a regularly healthy diet, exercise and a positive attitude.

    I'm guilty of yo yo dieting. Doing things like taking diet pills, laxatives, and the cayenne pepper cleanse (to start out with to give myself a "clean slate" to start off with), then taking diet pills and then working out for two hours at a time, and limiting my calorie intake to no more then 500 calories a day. Made me extremely cranky and I did lose weight, a lot of it, but I look at pictures from when I did those diets and I see how sick I looked. And, I'm a recovering eating disorder survivor. So, any diet I do, I have to be extremely careful with. I don't take those diet pills anymore or the laxatives, or the cleanse. Although, I do skip meals sometimes and I still work out at least for two hours at the time, but I take in more calories and I drink muscle milk. So far so good.

    to put on weight you must consume more calories than you are burning.

    Isn't the concept of "crash diet" in itself bad and hurtful? From the diet-related and nutrition literature I've read, it seems that a steady diet is more productive in the long run because your body actually gets used to it. I guess crash diets are good for weddings or star-studded events, but they sound so dangerous...even if it's just drinking juice for a week.

    The idea of being on a "diet" needs to vanish from your mind. You are setting yourself up for destruction. I have been a memeber on a calorie counting site, but it's so much more than that... It's based on eating "green" for life... Basically... BALANCE. You make sure you have all your daily needs for vits. and mins. and stay at a minimum level of 1200 cals a day or more depending on your caloric output, and you are "Green". I think it's a tool the whole US should be using. Obesity is far too common anymore. www(dot)nutrimirror(dot)com Its free. Its supportive. And its for life... NOT a crash diet. I can eat chips, or pizza, or candy... but I have to make sure it's in moderation. And the truth is, I actually like eating the more healthy food now with all the knowledge i have gained. I strongly urge everyone to check it out... This is not spam.. I promise.

    I am begining tomorow the soup and salad diet but with my regular breakfast.Right now Iweight 246 so I will let everybody know how its going in a week from tomorow, See you then !

    CarmenL- Do your research before starting anything new for sure. Just remember to keep it green (veggies), and lots of fruits as well. Whole grains when using any carbs. No more potatoes! No mashed, or whole potatoes. They are weight clingers. After a week of eating this, as leanneandbabyj mentioned as well, you will enjoy eating the healthier items rather than the greasy and fattening ones. As long as you keep up with a daily routine of excersise, you will find yourself becoming healthier! And feel great about it!!!

    Fad diets for the most part will make your wallet, not body slimmer. Why do think new ones are always coming out? -- to make room for the old ones that failed too.

    You need to eat a balanced diet which is high in complex carbohydrates (like nonstarchy fresh fruits and vegetables, whole-grain products, lean meat, low-fat dairy products, and drink lots of water. Eat high-fat, starchy, and sugary foods in moderation. Eating a heathy diet is not complete without getting at least 30 minutes of regular exercise daily.

    The whole idea of a "diet" is not productive - if you want to weigh less than you currently do, you have to change your lifestyle. The problem with diets is that afterwards people go back to the way they were eating before, which results in gaining back of weight. You have to educate yourself about food and alter your lifestyle to lower your calorie intake, maximize nutrition and up your calories burned. Sorry, no way around it!
