Wash Your Hands
Washing hands is the number one way to avoid the swine flu. Most swine flu infection happens when a person touches something infected with H1N1 virus then touches their mouth, nose or eyes. Wash your hands often while traveling, especially after using the bathroom and before eating.
Avoid Sneezers and Coughers
Avoid anyone who is sneezing or coughing. These are the people most likely to give you the swine flu. If you are sitting near someone sneezing or coughing on an airplane, ask to sit somewhere else. If that is not possible, politely ask the person to cover up their nose and mouth because you can't afford to be sick.
Wear a Mask
Surgical masks are becoming a common sight on airplanes and in airports these days. You might get a curious glance occasionally, but that beats contracting the swine flu. Wearing a surgical mask will help you avoid catching swine flu through the air. It can also help prevent you from spreading it if you are already infected. They can be purchased at any medical supply store and many drug stores.
Get Vaccinated
There is an H1N1 vaccine that helps prevent swine flu. It is available at clinics and medical facilities in most major cities, but is often reserved only for high risk patients. This includes children under 2, pregnant women, senior citizens, medical professionals, and those with compromised immune systems. If you are eligible for the H1N1 vaccine, get it immediately. If you are not in a high risk group, call around to see if any medical facilities will allow you to get one anyway.
Stay Healthy
If you are in good overall health, your immune system will help fight off the swine flu. While you are traveling, make an effort to eat a well balanced diet, drink plenty of water, and get at least 8 hours of sleep per night. The swine flu virus is more likely to infect someone who is not taking care of their body.
