The first week of November spawns a pre-holiday panic. Symptoms include wasn't-it-just-September-denial, stressing over gifts for the family, and dreading scraping the ice off our windshields. It can, however, be a time to relax, and it starts with taking a step outside your door. We've provided you with five simple ways to unwind before the winter whirlwind by taking advantage of the beautiful fall weather.
1) Exercise outdoors
Exercise is a proven stress-reliever. However, a busy schedule, tight budget or fear of spandex can make exercising just one more thing to fret about. To avoid workout-induced wrinkles, forget the gym and focus on having fun outdoors. Remember "tag"? Get a group of friends together, then unleash your inner child by running away from whoever is "It." Or, try baseball, tug-of-war, soccer or Frisbee. If you have a dog, play "fetch" at the park. The activity you're doing isn't important. What counts is you get your blood pumping and enjoy the crisp November air.

2) Plan a picnic
No one said a picnic has to involve potato salad and a checkered tablecloth. Bundle up in your favorite sweater and a gigantic scarf, then grab a baguette from the bakery and bring a thermos of hot chocolate. Invite someone special or a handful of friends, and spend all afternoon feeling your worries melt away.
3) Trail riding
Winston Churchill said, "There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of man." What's great about a trail ride is that the horses are trained to follow the leader, so it's ideal for beginners. You will find yourself completely relaxed as you enjoy the fall foliage while bonding with a beautiful animal. Too scared to get on board? Visit a nearby stable and bring plenty of carrots to share.

4) Take a walk
A great way to stop fretting about the upcoming events is to focus on the present. Wake up just 15 minutes earlier than normal, throw on your sneakers (stay in your pajamas, who cares), and walk around your neighborhood. It sounds corny, but by appreciating your surroundings and noticing the way you are breathing or paying attention to your footsteps will take your mind off everything else.
5) Explore your local farmers market
Take a time out this week to research where the outdoor farmers market is in your area, then stop by on the weekend. Farmers markets are a great way to meet new people, and many sell crafts and delicious, ready-to-eat food. Allow the fresh, organic produce to inspire autumn recipes. We also love the idea of going apple-picking to stock up for Thanksgiving pies.
