5 Weird Ways to Beat a Cold

There's so much talk about how to avoid getting sick. But what do you do when you feel that telltale tickle in the back of your throat--and you're in the fast lane to Cold City, population: Check out some of the weirder ways to keep your cold symptoms under wraps:

1: Walk fast. New research has shown that walking briskly will help keep a cold at bay by increasing your immunity. But don't run (you'll get sick if you overexert yourself), and if you have anything more than the sniffles, you best stay in bed.

2: Don't blow.
When your nose is all stuffed up, blowing both nostrils at the same time can propel mucus up into your sinuses, which could possibly cause further infection. Um, yecch. Instead, take decongestants or blow one nostril at a time.

3: Take a sauna. Research shows that the warm, moist air somehow gives your bod the same detoxifying benefits that drinking lots of liquids does when you're sick, ushering the cold right out the door.

4: Have a hot fruit drink.
A fruit cordial, to be specific (can you tell this is a study from Wales?). Drinking a hot cup of apple and black currant juice has been found to relieve symptoms such as sniffling, coughing, sore throat, and runny nose. Scientists are researching whether other hot drinks are as effective.

5: Eat peppers. Chow some red bell peppers, high-in-vitamin-C superfoods that are believed to reduce the length and intensity of cold and flu symptoms. Other immunity-boosting foods: yogurt, tumeric, garlic, oregano, green tea, and pumpkins.

Oh--and here's one way that's total common sense, but it's worth repeating: Snooze. Just make sure it's for more than seven hours a day--research has shown that people who get less zzzs than that are three times as likely to get a cold.

High in Vitamin C? It's been proven now that vitamin C will not help you get over a cold. It may help prevent you from getting one, but not help you get over it any faster.

Thanks so much for that handy information. I have experienced some of this myself to know that its true. LOL.... With the hot fruit drink, maybe that is what Theraflu tries to add in their med. This also works really good for me, before the cold/flu, after all the symptoms have appeared and completely takes away all of my symptoms. Of course, not everyone would or could want to take Theraflu.

Nothing really "works". A cold is a cold. It just takes a week to get over.

Alma, that's what I want to know, I don't think I've every met anyone in my life who blew with both nostrils rather than one at a time. I mean, seriously, is that even possible??

The best way to protect yourself from getting sick is to stay healthy. Fruits, veggies, exercise. If you do get sick - hot spicy soups, hot tea, and keep up with those fruits and veggies. A humidifier is also a great addition to your house.

Sleep, sleep and more sleep is the best way to ward off colds. During the winter/dold months, I try to get at least 8 - 10 hours a day. I know people will say "I don't have that kind of time." I don't either, but I know that if I get sick that will suck up a WHOLE lot more of my time, so sometimes, the house is dirty, or we have pizza for dinner, or I don't get my walk in, but I ALWAYS get my sleep and I stay very healthy!

Sweating is a great way to release toxins! But don't recommend a sauna to those who live in arid climates. When you're not used to humidity or moisture, a sauna can really do a number on your sinuses.

Saline spray to clear toxins from your sinuses daily is very good. You should NEVER blow your nose full force. Always press on one nostril and GENTLY blow the other. To do otherwise you're merely irritating your passages, and your nose will retaliate!

Sugar, caffeine, heavy foods. Avoid them when your immune system is not optimum. You are better off not eating anything but broth and juice when you feel something coming on. Your stomach is vital to your immune system and loading it with food only makes your stomach work harder to balance you.

When you pass by people, exhale and avoid breathing in, especially if they're coughing or sneezing. Don't cover your mouth unless you have tissue handy or you know your hands are sanitized. Keep hands away from the face and away from insides of the ears.

Pet hair can carry bacteria and viruses. Always wash your hands or use sanitizer after touching a pet, especially when others have touched your pet.

Visit your local healthy food market for suggestions on immunity supplements too, pop one a day during cold and flu season or when you're feeling compromised.

Sitting in a steam room works wonders, too, especially if you have chest congestion. All the warmth and moisture helps loosen things up beautifully! I always head for the steam room when I get sick!
