Don't lean on the machines

You may not realize how much your depending on the handle bars on stair-steppers, treadmills, ellipticals and other equipment you use to exercise. Do a posture check several times throughout your workout so you will get the most out of your time on the machine and avoid wrist and back strain leaning can cause.

We don't all have the budget to hire a personal trainer or the patience to watch a video carefully enough to get all the how-to's we really need when we start a new workout. Getting the guidance of a professional will help you learn proper form, avoid injuries, and exercise more efficiently. While you are lining up a Q & A session with a class instructor or rewinding back through the fitness DVD, take note of these 6 fitness mistakes you don't want to make. [via Active.com and Outside]

These tips are great— I can’t tell you how many times I’ve limped around after a seemingly tiny flaw in form while exercising. Even adjusting my form due to low ceiling height while lifting free weights has hurt me in the past. Thanks for sharing tangible tips like this, Jessica, and keep them coming for women like me who workout at home and need a little fitness guidance from the pros. Kat

GREAT tips for the most part. However....

"Remember that being challenged is good but lifting to the point of muscle failure is not."

What the hell? Where's the evidence for this one? Muscles only get 'toned' and grow from being worked. You don't want to kill yourself, but a good workout can most definitely have you struggling to finish the last rep of an exercise for a given muscle group! And isn't that what "muscle failure" is? Getting so tired you can't do anymore at that moment? If you have a spotter or are using a machine it doesn't matter if your muscles fail! Considering how I see many guys and almost every woman at the gym taking it WAY too easy with regards to weights, it is pretty silly to tell people to hold back. Weight bearing exercises build muscle and improve posture leading to a more toned shapely appearance. Most women either ignore this kind of exercise, or use the same light weights forever which leads to no results. The key is to push yourself - if you can't properly complete a set with good form, so be it - the fact that you tried means you'll be more likely to complete it next time.

Also don't close your eyes while on the treadmill. It is dangerous. I fell off of a treadmill. I know. I hurt my elbow and knee. I was also very embarassed but the guys in the gym tried to make me feel better. I know they were laughing behind my back. They kept asking me what I was thinking. To tell you the truth. I don't really know what I was thinking. I guess I was not thinking! Learn from my mistake.

these are really good tips. the only thing that i would like to add is that it is ok to eat protein bars, but only if you know how to tell which ones are good for you (they are few and far between), but the ones shown in this slide are definitely not good because i've personally looked at this brand and the vanilla yogurt ones have 300 calories in them..personally,for that i would rather go enjoy a small hamburger.

Someone please tell me where the remainder of the "7 fitness don'ts for exercise newbies to athletes" are located on this page or the link to follow, as I am confused and very lost. I scanned the page over and over again, one would think ease to accesing this information would be right in your face, since it is the page i actually opened. Instead it is nowhere to be found. Please help me...my wife has experieced the same thing, and has commited to never open one of these articles again. In addition, what's really diapointng is that the headlines are never accurate to what is the true once you do open and find and read the articles. Cheers
