7 popular food and fitness products during this recession

You may be holding off on buying some items in this tough economy, but are there other things - maybe treats of sort - that you still buy for yourself? A new report shows some of the products flying off store shelves during this recession, including:
  • Chocolate (Profits at Hershey Co. are up 20 percent)
  • Wine, but people are buying cheaper vintages
  • Vegetable seeds (Sales of seeds like green beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash and lettuce went up 30 percent)
  • Spam, Dinty Moore stew, chili (Hormel Foods Corp. had a six percent increase in its grocery products unit)
  • Macaroni and cheese (Kraft Foods Inc. had double-digit growth in macaroni and cheese dinners)
  • Running shoes
  • Bicycle helmets

Slow economy doesn’t stop sweet tooth

Are you eating comfort foods in these tough economic times?

Is the bad economy making us fat?

I’m definitely contributing to the up sales in chocolate, but I’m not buying more now than I usually do - I just always buy chocolate. :)

How about you? Anything on that list you’ve been buying more of during this recession? Anything off the list?

I buy more fruits and vegetables. Less sodas. Less junk. Less red meat and more chicken.

I don't know why people are buying more Spam. Spam was a staple during the depression because the Army had excess amounts and it really was cheap. Nowadays at more than 3 dollars for a 12 oz can it is NOT economical! Dry beans and lentils are much better for you and dirt cheap. Even tofu is cheaper than Spam.

Leah, maybe they are stocking up on spam in case of the apocalypse.. Isn't SPAM considered the cockroach of the food world... oh wait, that might be the twinkie actually... where it can last through a nuclear blast and you can still eat it 100 years later?

Is anyone the least bit worried about over doing the sodium? Geez, Spam, Ramen noodles. I love them too but I worry about blowing up like a beachball!

And as long as we are throwing caution to the wind, this is my all time favorite. Dump brown sugar in with the peanut butter, and eat with a spoon. You HAVE heard of Ambien eating, haven't you?
