All I want for Christmas is...a Planned Parenthood gift certificate?

I am not sure whether to let out a giddy little laugh or raise a woman power fist in the air at the news that Planned Parenthood of Indiana will be offering gift certificates for sale as holiday gifts.

The gift certificates are available for purchase in values from $25 to $100 and can be used for all services the organization provides, whether 'tis the season for pap smears, contraception or routine medical visits and procedures (yes, including abortions).

Planned Parenthood of Indiana's president and CEO, Betty Cockrum, said the offering is out of concern that women will forego basic medical needs during stressed economic times. She added that women in particular are likely to gas up the car or put food on the table than tend to their own healthcare.

Although Cockrum said she would be "amazed if a dime of it goes toward an abortion," the program is, not surprisingly, under fire. The director of one anti-abortion organization called the gift certificates "lethal," asserting that the campaign contradicts the meaning of Christmas, which is "about the celebration of human life."

Planned Parenthood chapters in Illinois, New York, Alaska, and Michigan are also considering offering gift certificates.

There have been some years I've been delighted to get holiday gift cards to my supermarket, Target, and favorite restaurants. Knowing that I was beginning the year with assurance I could stock up on all the things I needed felt like a sigh of relief.  I am privileged not to have to bank on presents to pay for groceries anymore but as a woman vigilent about health matters, I think it would be great to know all my co-pays were taken care of for the year.

What about you? What if you could get the gift of birth control or an annual exam in your stocking this season? Is a Planned Parenthood present an offensive or delightful present to get?

I love the idea of a gift certificate for health care. Although abortion is an optional use of these gift certificates, it is not the only thing that they can be used for. IE: Paps, pregnancy counseling and care, breast exams, etc. I had a pap come back showing pre-cancerous cells and had to have a biopsy and later a cryotherapy session. I have HUGE medical bills now that I have to pay off (slowly, since I'm not loaded with cash). Now I have to get paps every six months, so that only adds up to more bills. So, needless to say, I would be more than happy to receive a gift certificate for planned parenthood. Especially since I'm pregnant now and need to save money for that too. Any help would be awesome, so all those people out there who think that its a bad idea to give the gift of health care can SHOVE IT!

I agree with lmarble2006. I think it's a great idea to give a gift certificate for health care. I just can't believe it took so long for someone to come up with the idea. And to those naysayers who think someone would use a gift card to pay for an abortion, paaahlleeeeze. The moon would sooner turn to green cheese.

Celebrating the birth of Christ with the death of the unborn? Truly sinister. What have we become?

Its a great idea. It will encourage more women to actaully get their birth control and not have accidents. and to all those who think its a sin, Remeber one thing: God wants people to believe in him not believe in YOUR opinions.

I think it's awesome. These gifts will surely go toward saving and protecting human lives! Like, for example, breast exams, birth control, pap smears, etc, etc... I really think it's a good idea for any health care facility. God knows I could use one for the dentist.

I would be so excited to get a gift card to pay for all of this... who likes to spend hard earned cash on annoying expenses like birth control? I want one!

Maybe they should start a frequent user club. Like get 4 abortions and get the 5th free.

Sounds like a very good idea. And maybe this kind of gift by letting people access more freely to contraception will help reduce abortion figures.

It's a great idea. Very practical and a good idea for someone who might forgo healthcare (pap smears, birth control, etc.) in these economic times.
