Are the weekends your prime time for working out or winding down?

Here we are, only hours away from the weekend and I am shocked at what I am thinking about. I keep pausing as I try to wrap up the loose ends of projects, respond to unanswered emails, and clear off my desk to think about when I will work out once the whistle blows at 5 o'clock.

I have a dinner party to attend at a fabulous Korean restaurant with very fun friends. I will be celebrating my son's birthday. I'll be attending a very special yoga and meditation workshop to celebrate the fall equinox. All of these events fill my weekend calendar, and still, my mind keeps wandering off to working out.

I've never been an obsessive exerciser. In fact, I've been challenged to keep up any kind of routine for more than a few weeks at a time. I get bored. I get lazy. I get busy. But something has changed and now I don't want more than a day to go by in between workouts, whether I am walking for an hour, practicing yoga for 15 minutes, doing a belly dancing DVD or running the stairs in my apartment. Now, the weekend seems like a great opportunity to get in uninterrupted time to sweat, de-stress, and elevate the heart rate rather than a time to sleep in, slack off, or stay inside. I am actually excited to get up in the morning, grab my iPod and running shoes, and get going -- before shopping or relaxing with the paper or making plans to have cocktails, even before coffee.

I know this new way of thinking -- and being -- is not the way every exerciser operates. Some people choose to be active all week so they can take time off from the gym or pool or track on the weekends. For me, this time off is the time I need to really focus on being those places.

What works best for you and your schedule? Do you thrive on weekend workouts? Or do prefer to keep your fitness slotted Monday through Friday? Or are you one of the few who work out every day of the week?

Hi Jessica, I actually work out most days of the week. I am like you, I used to do something for a while and get bored or whatever and quit. I have been doing some form of exercise in the mornings for about a year now and just started adding in pm workouts. I find it a great way to destress. I also find myself looking forward to going home and working out.

I work out 5 days during the week so most of the time I take the weekend off - but not always.

Ugh. I am busy from dawn till dusk during the weekdays, I need the weekends to swim, or lay in the hot tub and watch TV and relax. I do work out on the weekends for a little bit, it helps to loosen up those tight muscles. Not as much as I do on the weekdays. I'm only 5' nothing, so a couple of extra pounds on me really shows.

I workout everyday except Sunday. Okay...I do tend to sometimes do yoga on Sundays, but not every Sunday. I take Sunday as my break day because I have other obligations that keep me busy during the day and I don't like night workouts unless I have had a really stressful day. But, once my schedule changes and my mornings are free again I might start back working out on Sunday too.

    I tend to think...

I can't wait to go cycling!

Oh boy, I can go running tomorrow!

Work gets in the way of my exercising. It's not an excuse not to, it just genuinely gets in the way. I love weekends when I don't have to squeeze in 30 min before or after work.

One man's workout is another man's wind down. Do they have to be mutually exclusive. I think it's all about balance, so there should be room for both every day.

reading this just validated my existence!!! haha, okay, okay, not quite, but i'm glad to see that others are just as busy during the week, and that someone else finally understands that an hour workout is simply NOT POSSIBLE most of the time! yay for friday-sunday workouts, and then letting yourself breathe, work and live during the week :)

i work out every morning in the gym usually doing cardio either bodycombat (taebo type)1x a wk/ rpm (spinning class) 3-5x/wk; bodypump (1 hr weightlifting) 2x/wk/ on Tuesdays I attend a running clinic at night and on Wednesdays night i go back for that 2nd bodypump class. on weekends i run either treadmill or outdoors for about an hour and sometimes still attend a spinning class. there are times i take one rest day for recovery... i guess i've getting addicted to endorphine high that if i miss several days of work out i really get moody... while friends and officemates have commented that i've lost a lot of weight (about 22 lbs now since start of this year) i know i'm doing this for myself coz diabetes runs in my family, both my parents who passed away had it and 5 brothers one of which died already have it also... so do it for yourself - whatever works for you and whatever makes you happier.
