Ask Dr. Kate: Does the pill increase your risk of cervical cancer?

Dear Dr. Kate,

I have been on the Pill since the age of 18, and I am now 23. I requested the pill due to the fact I have extremely painful and long periods.

The pill has been a wonder, but now I am concerned after reading that being on the pill for 5 or more years increases your risk of cervical cancer.

I have only ever had 3 sexual partners, all of whom I used condoms with, and I am not in a relationship at present. I had a smear test done last year and everything was clear but am just a bit worried. I really don't want to come off the pill as I had 6 years of torture before being prescribed it. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Pill Lover

Dear Pill Lover,

The relationship between cervical cancer and the birth control pill is a tricky one. Some research has suggested that being on the pill makes it harder to clear the HPV virus if you become infected with it. And we know that HPV is the real culprit in cervical cancer. On the other hand, other studies have found NO relationship between being on the pill and developing serious pap smear abnormalities or cancer. So the truth isn't completely known yet. (Find out how you can tell if you have HPV.)

What we DO know is that if you're screened regularly (pap smears every 2-3 years for most women), we'll pick up any abnormalities in your cervix in PLENTY of time to treat you before it turns into cancer. So if your paps have always been normal, and you always use condoms (which decreases your risk of HPV), I would stay on the pill. I wouldn't trade good birth control, and one that makes your quality of life so much better, for a theoretical risk.

Have any of you worried about your pap smears while on the pill?

MAN MADE MEDICATIONS INCLUDING HORMONES CAN CAUSE CANCER! MY MOM HAD BREAST CANCER THAT WAS DIRECTELY LINKED TO HORMONES!!! THEY ARE NOT SAFE IN ANY WAS SHAPE OR FORM. NATURAL IS BEST,THE REASON FOR PAINFUL OR LONG PERIODS IS A BAD ATTITUDE ABOUT SEX AND YOUR BODY AND BEING TOLD YOUR PERIOD IS BAD. IT IS NOT AND NEVER HAS BEEN BAD ONLY SOCIETY (the u.s.) HAS MADE IT A BAD PAINFUL THING. YOUR BODY KNOWS WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO DO IT STOP LETTING SOCIETY RUN AND RUIN YOUR BODY. MOTHER EARTH KNOW BEST NOT SOME DOCTOR.

Cancer related to HPV is not the only cervical cancer to worry about. Unfortunately there's women, like me, that are HPV negative and had adenocarcinoma of the cervix. Regular pap smears are exremely important!! After reading some of the studies I still wonder if the horomones in birth control put you more risk for cervical adenocarcinoma.

Optivia some ladies do have painful periods.I am glad that you don't but I do.Cramping that is so painful that it makes you double over is real and not caused by society.I have been on the pill for 11years and I get paps every year.If your going to get cancer you are going to get it whether if your family history puts you at a higher risk, hormone therapy, cell phone use, or the chemicals in food.

Optiva, seriously you believe that? What are you 10 or 11? No one told me my period was bad. There are women who suffer from very painful and bad periods and the pill helps them deal with it. It is not because of a bad attitude about sex. It is a natural occurence to all women, the extent of the pain and how long they last depends on each woman.

Optiva, have you ever had a painful period? I'm talking about so painful that you throw up and miss school. I also have ovarian cysts that are so painful when they rupture. Birth control is the only thing that helps the pain and reduces the amount of cysts. By the way I suffered from it since the age of 12 long before I started having sex! Please do some research before posting degrading comments.

But that was for years ago......I am scared now that I hear this about cervical cancer going on....

Heheheheh my work here is done, you all will get pissy about anything won't you. hehehehe no wonder you all have bad periods. Your attitude about your body will and does affect you. I believe that so called medical professionals don't help you by pushing chemicals that are man made and harmefull, let your body function normaly and it will fix it's self. All these pains and issues can be treated and cured with out drugs. We are so brainwashed by the health care system. Go on take you drugs but you aren't really treating the cause of the problem just making it. Trust me I know.

    optiva,

Your a bored, angry, and sad person. You make blanket statements about how women feel about their bodies and b*cth that drug free treatment is the only choice, and you trash EVERYONE for sharing thier personal stories. Please take your ranting else where, your not a doctor, and you present no medical facts to back up what you stated. If you wanted to your drug free message across, try posting useful information instead of ranting and trying to piss people off. Please, grow up, and get a life!
