I tend to camp pretty light - I will bring a tent, sleeping bags, matches, wood and food, some toiletries and I am ready to go. However, I know many people who seem to bring their whole house with them when they camp. Isn't the charm of camping the simplicity? Isn't it about connecting with nature and camping-mates, and leaving behind the hustle and bustle?
Or maybe I am just lazy - after all, if I bring along a ton of makeup and trendy clothes, I will feel like I have to look nice. However, if I just bring sunscreen and hiking clothes, I have the excuse of "Im camping!". What do you guys think? Any camping trips in the future? And what do you bring with when you go?

Report AbuseJust got back week and half ago and brought a friend. If I am "camping" I bring the whole sha-bang. Well apart from anything electronic. Tent, outdoor bug shelter w/ table and chairs to avoid mosquitoes and chat. Bug Spray, toiletries, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cooler, food, jet boil, clothes, water container, swimming gear + mask, 2 pairs of shoes (one for water and being grungy), and usually mining equipment like a sluice and gold pan.
I also bring my wilderness and primitive skills books and try to be minimal or supplement the supplies such as bug spray by using natural repellents. There are many ways to have fun out there from bringing nothing and using stone tools, to a knife only, to a knife and a small kit (sleeping item tent/hammock cooking pot, knife, books) I like all variations but I tend to still practice primitive skills even if on a full camp.
I try not to be too minimalistic and just practice my skills while already camping as much as possible to not take up resources. I think it is wasteful to build a debris shelter or any semi permanent shelter if your not going to be around long enough to to use it.
One thing I will never bring or allow anyone to bring is a television! Tv does not belong camping. The only electronic thing I would ever allow would be a metal detector if out mining, a video/still camera to capture the moments, or in the odd case a laptop but only for emergency communication or posting to a blog r website about the trip. I am guilty of the metal detector thing.
In short I absolutely love the outdoors but no everyone I bring is so comfortable with them so I bring most of the basic comforts while still disallowing anything that does not keep the guest focused on enjoying the things nature has to teach them. Its a hard balance.
Above all else my favorite things to bring are my knife and my many many books on ethnobotany, plant guides, outdoors stories, and primitive living. Its great that books do not take electricity and pretty much take care of any needs out there if the tent and all the rest of the stuff blow away. I can't wait to get more hand drill practice in. I am always itching to go camping.
I am off again soon! In the process of selling all I own to go minimalistic while going to school. Some people have never even been camping in any form. I can't understand that at all!

Report AbuseHi Laura,
At least you really go camping. Had a friend who said he was going camping with his wife and ended up in a trailer with 100 other people in trailers, electricity, plumbing, the whole 9 yards. We laughed, "that's not camping." I love the outdoors, too. We go hiking with our grandson. Have lots of smaller mountains around here in Maine and love to hike up them and take lots of pictures. I recently put up a blog post about Mt. Tire'm that we hiked up. Beautiful climb.
Enjoy your weekend, dear.

Report AbuseHi Laura,
Hope you are well. How did the camping go? No poison ivy I assume. If it's within 5 miles of me I'll get it..............scratch, scratch!

Report AbuseThe camping was great - We hiked 11 miles on the mountain the first day, and rode 11 miles on our bikes the next, and enjoyed the beautiful weather! There is nothing like fresh air, trees and birds, and cooking baked potatoes in a campfire ;-)
