Can drinking and weight loss mix?

I'm still trying to finesse how the whole alcohol situation fits into my new lifestyle. Unlike sweets, I've never been the type to need a drink at dinner, but I've always been a social drinker--a couple of glasses of wine out at a nice dinner, a cocktail or two (or three) at a party--and always an unopened bottle of champagne in my fridge for those Chinese-takeout-and-bubbly nights with the girls. But for a long time, while trying to really make a dent in changing my body, my motto went the way of an after-school special in regards to booze: Just say no. I'd have a glass of wine every so often, but in general, the most intoxicating thing in my highball was a wedge of lime. (You can have your drink without all of the excess calories! Here are a few recipes for yummy low-calorie cocktails.)

But as I'm trying to figure out what I need to do to maintain the changes I've made with my body and a social life, I've decided that a totally booze-free existence isn't necessary, either. I can have a couple glasses of wine once a week--if the occasion calls for it, like a birthday celebration--without feeling like I've done myself in. But here's the tricky part: It's not the calories in the alcohol that worry me so much, since I'm not a binge drinker, but it's the calories I consume after a night of drinking. See, I went to my friend Alyssa's birthday party last night, had two drinks, and then was completely ravenous. Maybe it's because my tolerance is just about zero after all these months cutting back? The point is, since I know alcohol stimulates my appetite and undermines my willpower (yes, I've chosen the W-word here!), I think it's best that a glass of wine is not more than a once or twice a week occurrence, max!

What do you guys think? Do you find that drinking puts the brakes on your weight loss program? Have any of you decided that alcohol and weight loss just don't mix in your world?

And here's a pic from last night. See, I am wearing more color! :- )

Hmmm...why are the French, who drink a LOT of wine with meals, not having their appetites "stimulated" by it? I was just in France for a week, and I saw all of two overweight French women, both of whom ran restaurants and are probably sampling all day. And even they were not really fat, either, just...zaftig.

I have often wondered this myself. I am a beer gal and love my occasional outings with my friends just hanging out by the trusty ole ice chest or at the local dive bar. Of course the craze of the "Adkins and other low carb diets" came the low-carb beer (Michelob Ultra or Miller Lite). I was completely sold on the idea that if I was "good" during the week with my low-carb diet I could drink all the low carb beer I wanted. I am in wonder of your questions too....does alcohol go along with a diet/weight loss????

My opinion is everyone is different!...In order for me to lose the weight I did...I completely let any sort of alcohol alone!!.....The swelling, bloating and weight just fell off...that was only in a month..I am continuing a good healthy, well balanced diet and it has dropped tremendously....I am almost to where I wanna be...not a skinny bean pole...but, a nice shapely woman of my age...61yrs. old and 5'7"....I feel pretty again and have alot more energy.....Oh! I also do my daily exercise...mostly squats.....This worked for me! Good Luck!

do NOT drink beer or hard liquor if you are watching your weight. have a glass of wine or two...it's typically only about 85 cal a glass and your body can break it down better. i substitute my fruit at dinner for a glass of wine if i am craving a drink or if it's a special occasion. it doesn't seem to affect my efforts to shed the pounds!

I have quite an active social life, relatively, so I usually stick with the rule that I watch what I eat during the week, and then weekends are free. However, "free" doesn't mean I binge, just that I don't monitor AS closely as I do during the week... I lost about 35 pounds and I've kept it off - with minor fluctuations - for about 2 years... This seems to work for me, although I understand everyone's body is different... I usually stick with light beer, white wine, or vodka/tonics, which are all fairly low in caloric content.

Here's my take- Red Wine is good for your heart, and if I stay within reasonable limits, the wine does the trick. Plus, with me, it instantly makes me feel full. So, for me, it's a plus. I've never been much of a binge drinker, so I don't worry about that, but that 1 or 2 glasses in the evening, it takes the place of high cal/fat snacks that I used to have.

Yeah I think alcohol tends to stimulate your appetite. Wine is kind of safer, but again moderation is key along with sweets and stuff. I have actually tapered off on the sweets instead and kept up my regular exercise program. Also as mentioned, everyone's body is different!

I am totally going through this right now. I am on a diet for Halloween, and I have cut out alchohol for the entire month of October. Cutting out alchohol is the ONLY way I have ever been able to lose weight. The minute I start drinking my stomach starts growling, so yes, it definately stimulates the appetite! It affects my social life but I think my friends can live without me going to the bar with them for a month:)

I agree with Joan T it all depends on the person...I myself have been on a weightloss/muscle gain mission for the past few months and so far so great, with and without the alcohol. I prefer rums and vodka, but i also do red wine. Red wine i can drink like water and not bloat or feel sluggish. Rum and Vodka are a little different...I will probably be bloated for a day or 2 and i can feel my metabalism slowing down, but I wil never gain any weight (given I work out 4-5 days a week for 60-90mins). I also agree with jody rae, I too also have these drinks in replace of "bad" snacks and cheat meals...you just have to be able understand your body and how it works. As long as this is not an everyday thing even as a social drinker myself, I have no problem with a few drinks here or there. Also if you really want to cut calories, straight up is the way to go ;-)

I struggle with this every weekend. I normally do not drink during the week, but I consume probably more than my share on the weekends, and it is usually beer nontheless, so I am just taking in more calories than wine, I would think. I work out 4 to 5 times a week and I can't seem to get below 131 lbs. I attribute it to my beer drinking. I like to think that I work out in order to be able to enjoy my beer every weekend!!
