Can you trust your latte?

I am a loyal fan of Starbucks, and as a result, I go quite regularly. That said, every time I order a drink there, I strongly doubt that my drink will be made the way I ordered. My distrust has gotten so bad, that I hover over the ‘pick-up’ station to watch how my drink is made to ensure it’s prepared correctly. I pretend to not be watching, but I am. I have become, in essence, a Latte Spy.

You may be thinking, and reasonably so, that I’m paranoid…I’m Type A…I’m a control freak…and that I REALLY need to let go. However, I’ve been a waitress and even with the best intentions, it is easy to zone out and forget minor requests. So, to be fair, I went on an undercover mission and put this to the test. Over the last month, I went to 20 different Starbucks across the country (I travel a lot). Each time I received my Latte, I double checked with the Barista to see if it was made the way I requested. Guess what?  50% of the time (yep…that is 10 times!) my drink was wrong and they had to remake it.

Admittedly, a good portion of the problem is me. I’m a high maintenance Latte lover who always customizes my drink order. Basically, if I can tweak an ingredient, I do. For instance, I can’t order a normal Iced Green Tea Latte. I have to order an Iced, Non-fat, Green Tea Latte without any melon syrup and with very little to no ice. That amounts to three customizations for one drink: 1) Non-fat, 2) No melon and 3) Very little to no ice. Not every drink I order is this specific, but I easily have at least one customization for any drink I order. I don’t do this to be difficult, I do it because I’m careful of how much extra sugar and fat I consume. I do it for nutritional reasons.

Although I’m fully willing to take some of the responsibility, let’s face it, Starbucks prides itself in delivering customized drinks to its consumers. So, in my mind, if they set the expectation that you will get what you ask for, they should deliver on their promise.

You might be thinking, “So what if your drink isn’t perfect?” Well, if you have a Starbucks “specialty drink” once every week or two, you are right. It probably isn’t much of a big deal. But if you are a regular, it does matter. Let’s look at the math:

  • Every time you have a drink that has more syrup than you want and/or low-fat milk instead of skim milk, you consume an extra 100 – 200 calories.
  • If over a month this happens 10 times, you would consume an extra 1,000 – 2,000 calories a month.
  • If you did this for a year, you would consume an extra 12,000 - 24,000 calories, resulting in a weight gain of 3.5 to 7 pounds.

Yikes! Now, to clarify, I’m not a huge advocate of calorie counting, but that is partially because I believe if you eat and drink the right things, you shouldn’t have to count calories. However, many of these extra calories come in the form of processed sugars and saturated fats…both of which aren’t good for any healthy diet. Further, processed sugar can play with your metabolism and give you sugar crashes you weren’t necessarily looking for.

Do you ever check in with your Barista to make sure you got what you asked for?

I totally agree with you. This doesn't just apply to Starbucks alone but other restaurants and food services. I used to love Wendy's, Jimmy Johns and A&W but after a while, I started getting bulls*** for my food. Either it was a completely wrong order, food was looking and tasting nasty and disgusting or the service was grumpy. I don't know what this is getting to. Especially A&W and Wendy's, I bought a chicken burger the other day and when I took a bite, a whole lot of water spurted out of it. It was like they BOILED it and just served it to me. I was so disgusted. I just asked for my money back and walked away. I didn't even bother for a replacement. There's always something wrong. I guess I'll be cooking at home for sometime.

I always check the notes they put on the cup. I get a simple nonfat mocha and they almost always put whipped cream on it, even though it's not the way the drink is supposed to be made. I usually go to the same Starbucks and the same woman will put whipped cream on my drink unless I watch her like a hawk. A couple times I told her "no whip" when I made my drink order and she very snottily told me, "It doesn't come with whip." Well for gosh sakes, then why do you always put whip on it!? Why would I want to put whipped cream on a reduced-calorie food item!? I've even had her do it, gone back and ask her to skim it off, then have her act like I'm an idiot for not telling her to leave it off. Grrr. All I want is my gosh darn coffee.

I'm a former barista and I'm sad to say you're right. I think what a lot of it is, is that the baristas are pressured to work as quickly as possible, especially during the xmas season. Those that are new or just need that few extra seconds to think about what they need to do for each drink cab get flustered easily and mistakes are made. It's sometimes just a toss up between quality and speed, and speed is winning.

You are very right, however, I really make it a point not to be too hard on the baristas. I've been in locations where they have been short staffed and it was just brutal - - the customers in the store and the drive thru were just not understanding. I do always check the drink, however, I'm not going to stress over those things, it's sort of a risk I'm taking drinking a fatty coffee/tea drink.

If you are that worried about it, maybe you don't need to go to Starbuck's every day. Spend your money on charity or a good cause instead, and just make your coffee at home.

I worked as a barista for about a year, and in a rush customers are bound to complain either way. I had one lady request a Chair Tea Latte with skim milk, half the Chai Mix, and extra foam and then later came back and told me it 'just didn't taste right.' Also, if you order during a rush and there's only one barista (like at Panera) don't throw a hissy fit because your drink isn't ready the second you order it. They get about 50 orders in 10 minutes during a rush and it is NOT easy.

As a ex-barista, I find people like you a real pain in ass. You return drinks that "don't taste just right", complains, complains, etc. We follow instructions as good as we can and yep when we are understaffed, rushed, things happen, just like in medicine, law, etc. You make your article sound like we are just waiting to screw with you drink just for fun. Please stay away and make your own drinks at home, we don't need your busines.

Mark w. I feel your pain. I don't usually make a stink and just deal (note the comment about it was an undercover mission above). Unfortunately, the reality is, that when someone orders something and you are paying good money, you have to hope that it is what you asked for. Nothing more, nothing less.
