Do celebs owe us an explanation for their addictions and breakdowns?

Every celebrity is different when it comes to how much of their personal lives they share with the public. Some avoid paparazzi at all costs and refuse to discuss their children or their relationships. Others talk incessantly about where and how frequently they have sex, or openly trash their exes. When it comes to  getting arrested or heading to rehab, most stars keep quiet.

Several weeks ago rampant rumors spread about Mischa Barton suffering a nervous breakdown. Supposedly this led to her being placed under involuntary psychiatric hold at LA's Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and caused her to miss the premiere event for her new show, "Beautiful People," and pushed back production. Barton now adamantly denies the breakdown and any substance problems, claiming she had "terrible" wisdom tooth surgery. As for why she was removed from her West Hollywood home July 15 by police, Barton remains vague.

"I went through a tough spot where everything compounded on me, and it was like a perfect storm, like everything was happening to me at once," says Barton. "I was down in the dumps about everything there for a while...Sometimes you have to hit rock bottom about things and have to get the most stressed out just to feel better again. I got completely stressed out and couldn't handle everything, and now I feel really in control." Hmm, that sounds like a breakdown to us. Barton is entitled to her privacy, but she chose to give an excuse that sounds questionable. We're not sure why.

Kelly Osborne also just came clean about her recent issues. It's no secret her whole famous family has battled with substance abuse problems. but we never knew how severe Kelly's addictions were till now. She says that by 2002 she began experimented with drugs, alcohol and specifically subscription pills, at on point taking up to 50 Vicodin a day. "Most people would overdose on 10," she says. After trying and failing at rehabilitation centers several times, she was placed under psychiatric care are the request of her parents. When she got home, she became a recluse. "I wasn't prepared for the speed of my downward spiral," says Osbourne. "Within a month I wasn't showering or brushing my teeth and my only relationship was with the pizza delivery man. The fact I didn't die is a miracle." She is honest yet optimistic about staying sober. "If I think about relapsing again, I want to cry. I'm realistic. For the first time, I've learned my biggest lesson: there's strong chance I will relapse. But because I recognize that, I feel like I've got the strength to fight it."

We admire Osbourne's strength and her willingness to share her struggle with others whom it may benefit. Do you think celebrities should share their personal battles? Do you think stars should lie about various incidents at the risk of lying, or would it be better for them to keep their private life private? [US][Perez]

Personally, I don't give a crap what celebrities do outside of their given entertainment field. If people had their own lives, they wouldn't be so obsessed with what celebrities do with theirs.

Hmm... In my opinion it's really a double edged sword... because on one hand you have celebrities that are "role models" and then they go off and do drugs, party incessantly and all the other things that look bad when you are a role model (whether by choice or de facto).... But on the other hand they are humans too and should be able to keep their lives private if they so choose to in order to work out whatever problems befall them.

The publicity value of disclosure by celebs of their latest private moment lapses often seem to be timed and calculated to boost movie, book, music launches. Is it just a coincidence that Barton has a new show and Osbourne will be dancing this fall with the stars?

Most of us really don't care to hear the dirty laundry...and for me, I really don't care to hear much of anything regarding celeb lives.

I don't really care what they do. I don't have to live with any of them, so they can do what they want.

Celebrities want you to listen to them or be like them when they are selling a product but want to be left alone when they want their privacy, it's a little bit hypocritical. I do think if they don't want to talk about it they should respond with "no comment" and leave it at that. Don't lie to the public or misinform young people that look up to you by implying a bad reaction to wisdom teeth surgery can lead to a psychiatric commitment.

50 vicodin a day, eh. Well you should be under the grass for certain.

I think a complete media black out on the trend of falling apart is in order. Too many weakminded people are influenced by these people who ahve the resources to clean up whereas no one else really does.

And they are just shills. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

Too much priviledge and access. What about Heath Ledger? Did anyone forget he was given the drugs by Mary Kate Ashley? When did she get her degree in medicine?

The lunatics have taken over the asylym.

While they don't "owe" an explanation, I think they do explain for sympathy and to attempt to retain control of the circus that surrounds them. After all, even if they try to hold on to privacy, that is also attempting to corral in the media frenzy. Ironic, considering media is what drives their career! I have no sympathy, however. They know it's part of the deal when they become famous. I would have more sympathy for the Boyd woman. I don't think she realized it would ever go that far. Barton and Osbourne, tho, are "mainstream" types that know how the game is played. This isn't 50 years ago where stars usually remained untouchable in their private lives and scandals were down played and swept under the rug. They know that they will trade their privacy for the fame and fortune that they crave, and they line up to do so! Right or wrong, whatever your opinion, it's how it is and they gladly do it, anyway!

I think "we" owe them an explanation of why we give a $hit in the first place.

Not always we all should know there are reasons most the time good reasons that people go astray. It is so hard to be always in the focuse of the public. We all know there was only one whom was without flaw and when you climb steep mountians sometimes you sometimes scrape your knees. But knowing that ther was a problem and why sometime helps to bring understanding and enlightens us. Truly so if ther are or were a person who we held or hold in high regard.
