Do You "PRAY" in Public???

Eyes closed.  Head bowed.  Fingers laced.  "Dear Father in heaven..."

Last week, I was out to lunch with my brother and parents.  We went to our favorite restaurant in town.  When our food came, I carefully put my napkin in my lap and dug right in.  I ate half of my BLT, snuck a few bites of my dad's halibut when he wasn't looking, and reprimanded my mother for not eating her vegetables.  We had a few laughs then dropped the tip before leaving.

As I'm exiting the restaurant (we were seated near the back) I have no choice but to walk in between a few tables.  That's when I saw a family of 4 or 5 about to have lunch.  But as I look down to give the winced "excuse me" look, I noticed they weren't looking at me and probably didn't even know I was walking by because their eyes were closed, their heads were bowed, hands placed in that familiar position, and they were praying.

It caught me completely by surprise.  Although my grandparents were religious and made me say a bedtime prayer when I spent the night, I had never seen them pray IN PULIC.

It made me wonder what other people were thinking.

Were they simply excercising their 1st amendment rights?  Were other people offended?  Is this considered a moral right or publicly inappropriete?  Would you do this?  Do you do this?  Is this necessary?

With the incessant fights over religion and human rights, I personally thought it was kind of brave.  We do not all belong to one religion or any religion for that matter.  Were other people offended that this family brought their very personal opinion to a public dining room?  Did others think it was a wonderful display of loyalty?  Or did anyone simply not care?

So what do you think?  Praying in public: a do or a don't?

Yes my family and I do Pray in public because we are giving Thanks to God for the food that he has placed before us, and plus when I do not Bless my food I can't enjoy it.

Why does it have to be all political or anything? They were giving thanks for their meal. It doesn't matter what the people around them believe or not. They were giving thanks. Period. I say grace everytime I am blessed enough to eat when I'm hungry. Don't forget, there may be someone who won't get to eat anything that day. Why not give thanks? Of course, not everybody has the same beliefs, which is fine, but I would never keep my faith a secret. I'm more afraid of offending God than my neighbors.

I pray before meals in public. I am not trying to offend anyone. I do not belive one must do it or be a "bad" person. It is personel with me. I am not loud nor do I try to impose it on anyone else, even at my table.

It should not offend anyone,as the people at THEIR table are praying together. Not loudly for others to notice. Yes, I pray before each meal to give thanks for the food and good company.

I see nothing wrong with praying in public. If you see me doing it, what's you going to do? Call a cop? I rather see people pray in public than to have them have out of control brats that misbehave throughout the whole meal.

I agree with you Karen. Pray in public. However, we do need to be careful that we are not doing it just so other people can look, and say 'Oh they are religeous. They pray.' We are not to be like the Pharasees, but do it because we truly are thankful to God for what He's given us, and want to give Him the glory for it ALL. Who knows, may be someone might ask you why your praying, and voila! You have a chance to share the Good News and your testimony. :)

Yes, I pray in public. I've never thought of it as exercising my rights, more of taking a moment to recognize and to thank God for the meal and the people I'm sharing the meal with. I have not witnessed many people pray at restaurants, but I know my family and friends pray when they are in public places. I prefer seeing a family that is praying in public than to hear swearing coming from the table or booth near me. It is a right that Americans take for granted like many of the other freedoms we have in this country. We should all fear the day an individual can not pray in a restaurant or any public place.

I pray before every meal whether I am at home or at a restaurant. I am not doing it to offend anyone or to show anyone anything. I just want to thank God for the food that is placed before me. Everything belongs to God anyway, we are just using it for a short time.
