Eating on the Run? What You Need To Know About Fast Food

By Jeanie Casison

Paying a Price for Convenience

With the busy lifestyle of most people, it's hard to find time to focus on nutrition. But if you frequently find yourself sitting in the drive-through line at a fast food restaurant, you need to think about the long-term health consequences that fast food creates. High fat foods lead to heart disease. High levels of sodium lead to high blood pressure, heart attacks and stroke. And it all leads to obesity, which has reached epidemic proportions and is of particular concern in children.

Super Size Equals Super Bad

It's so easy to think, "For only pennies more, I can have extra large!" But the amount of calories in a super-sized meal comes close to what most of us should be consuming in a whole day; much less for an individual meal. Since the calories are largely made up of fat, sodium and carbs, you'll find yourself hungry again much sooner than if you'd eaten a healthier meal. It's easy to see a number of reasons why eating fast food on a regular basis leads to obesity.

Fast Food Addict?

Do you ever find yourself craving fast food? Research is showing changes in the brain of those who regularly eat foods high in fat and sugar. The body normally produces hormones that tell us when we are full. But the more fat and sodium we consume seems to trigger an immunity to the signals these hormones produce. Other hormone levels affected by high fat consumption seem to make us crave even more fat, and making it worse is the low energy level that a high-fat diet brings. The effect is that it becomes a vicious cycle of eating high fat foods, craving more, then not being able to work it off because all that fat is making us tired.

Healthier Alternatives

There are healthier alternatives to a traditional burger and fries. But let's not confuse "healthier" with "healthy." A three-piece chicken breast strip entree is "healthier" than a burger, but with 20 grams of fat and 930 milligrams of sodium, it's hardly considered healthy. And some chicken sandwiches are surprisingly higher in fat and calories than a burger. Even salads can quickly fall into an unhealthy category when you pile on a dressing loaded with fat and sugar.

Everything in Moderation

Grabbing a fast food meal once in awhile when you're traveling or when your schedule is tight won't have much of an effect on your health. But if fast food is a regular part of your diet, you might want to consider the health ramifications. The key is being well-informed before you walk into a fast food restaurant so you can make better choices. A little Internet search will help you to decide ahead of time what to order. A little pre-planning to allow the time to eat a healthy meal, or packing a healthy alternative to eat on the road is more than worth the effort.

Fast food is killing kids today. No parent should feed their kid, McDonald's, Burger King or any other fast food out there. Go back to the 50's when kids were slim and healthy, played outside and ate what their parents made.

I luuuuv McDonald's southwest salad, and not that bad for you, and quick and easy---but i luvs a quater ounder too, just not very often, moderation. And your kids need to know that too, McDonalds should be a once in a while treat, not daily lunches.

I don't quite agree with you Habanero. Growing up my family only ate at McDonnels maybe 12 times a year (if that.) and that's was usualy when we were doing a road trip (my Mom used McD's as a good restroom stop.) The rest of the time we ate good meals. I grew up having it enough to be a treat, and having it enough to know I don't want it all the time. (About 12 times a year when I'm on road trips is often enough for me.) If fast food is eaten as a treat, I don't see the harm in taking kids there every once in a while. I love the fact the McD's offers apples instead of fries with their kids meals. I just wish that option was available for the value meals.

personally i wont touch Mcdonald's. Their food is the worst out there!! Just the burger patty has over 50 ingredients!! You all need to go to youtube.com and type in 4 year old burger and see what this place is doing to you. If i ever want a burger. I go to In-N-Out. There i know my food is fresh.. made when i order and has real ingredients. Nothing is frozen or sitting in grease. They dont even cook with grease! So if Im not at home, its just like having a home made burger.

Best thing to do is to go online, compare your fast food choices and see which one is best for you.

here is the link .. i suggest you all watch it!

"Does the word 'duh' mean anything to you?"

Seriously, who the frick doesn't know this stuff by now?

I used to work at Micky Dee's and its a rip off! Well if you do go there I would recommend getting a side salad and add a grilled patty, Its smaller and cheeper than the regular salads but it still fills you up. Although I wouldn't recomend it because who knows what "fresh" means to them?

I actually work at McD's right now (only for one more day though, thank god) and I see people come through almost daily with their kids and order the worst things all the time. My favorite is when the parents order the kids apples and milk and then get themselves a large double quarter pounder meal. It doesn't do any good to force your children to eat healthy if your not actually helping to set the example by doing so yourself. Its the whole "Do as I say not as I do" thing, and come on how many people went and did exactly what you saw your parents doing just because they did it and told you you couldn't? It doesn't help your child when you aren't setting the example.

Joy P---- the extra value meals for lunch and dinner actually do have the option of getting apples, a parfait, or a side salad instead of fries, at least here they do.

Julia---- the hamburger meat is actually 100% beef, i know it doesn't seem like it but it is, and believe me i'm not saying that out of some crazy loyalty to the corporation. I have only worked there while i was in school because the hours available were what i needed and they paid me more than anywhere else was willing to. I'm just saying don't believe everything you see on you tube.

There are a million ways to die. If someone would rather kill themself with eating fast food it is no diffrent than a person who smokes, drinks, or does drugs. To each his own... Live and let live and all of the other sayings that are out there.

100% Beef including the head, cartilage, guts, tail etc. All the worst parts of the animal. Yuck! To top that off most fastfood restaurants import their meat from slashed rainforests. It's bad all around.
