Fug or Fab?: Ryka Mary Jane athletic shoes

Ryka shoes popped up on my laptop screen twice last week: First, in an ad touting Kelly Ripa as their new spokesperson. Second, in a post on one of my fave sites ever, Cool Mom Picks. Normally, Kelly Ripa wouldn't send me on a potential online shopping adventure, but the Cool Mom Pick endorsement made me curious.

I went through the site specifically looking for a cute pair of silver athletic shoes I saw shining next to Kelly Ripa and never quite found them. I yawned at a lot of the merchandise -- mostly shoes that look like the shelves of shoes you can find at any old sports store.

And then I saw these. And they made me stare.

And stare and stare some more. I couldn't decide: Are these shoes a sturdier version of urban sneakers, ever-popular among the mommy and work-at-home set? Or are they bulked up disasters designed in an effort to "feminize" fitness shoes?

I love me a good Mary Jane, don't get me wrong. So is it me, or are these Mary Janes totally misguided?

I might be able to be down with the white and orange, but I am not sure I could get past the crrrrshhhht of the big old velcro strap every time I put them on and took them off.

You tell me: Are these walking shoes fug or fab?

If they feel good for exercise, I don't care what they look like. But, no, they wouldn't be my first choice.

The black ones look better than the fugly grey ones. I really don't wear name brands so if it's affordable then I might buy it but if not then there's a payless around. :-D

These aren't really athletic shoes, there's no way that they can give you enough support. They may be comfy to walk around the neighborhood in (I could find much more attractive shoes to do it in), but they're not something I'm going to wear playing any type of sport or even on the elliptical at the gym. If you're going for comfy and don't care how you look, go for Crocs!

Ryka has some really pretty shoes. They have a pair of beautiful walking/casual sneakers called the Moira with this gorgeous pleated satin detailing around the shoe.

They're also really comfy shoes. I have a pair of the MC2 Run, and I've come home and put them on after a long day at work, and they made my back and legs stop hurting. That's when I was sold. For the comfort and support level, the number of different styles, and the price-point, I'm pretty impressed with Ryka.

Is weight loss surgery the answer for the obesity epidemic? Should all the fatties just go in for the slice and dice and then hit the ground running (and shrinking)?
