Fug or Fab?: Ryka Mary Jane athletic shoes

Ryka shoes popped up on my laptop screen twice last week: First, in an ad touting Kelly Ripa as their new spokesperson. Second, in a post on one of my fave sites ever, Cool Mom Picks. Normally, Kelly Ripa wouldn't send me on a potential online shopping adventure, but the Cool Mom Pick endorsement made me curious.

I went through the site specifically looking for a cute pair of silver athletic shoes I saw shining next to Kelly Ripa and never quite found them. I yawned at a lot of the merchandise -- mostly shoes that look like the shelves of shoes you can find at any old sports store.

And then I saw these. And they made me stare.

And stare and stare some more. I couldn't decide: Are these shoes a sturdier version of urban sneakers, ever-popular among the mommy and work-at-home set? Or are they bulked up disasters designed in an effort to "feminize" fitness shoes?

I love me a good Mary Jane, don't get me wrong. So is it me, or are these Mary Janes totally misguided?

I might be able to be down with the white and orange, but I am not sure I could get past the crrrrshhhht of the big old velcro strap every time I put them on and took them off.

You tell me: Are these walking shoes fug or fab?

What's wrong with everyone? I think these are way cuter than regular sneakers with laces for every day mommy-on-the-go wear!

Fab !!!. I think they have a market for theses. As a 50 yr old I had black paten leather maryjanes and loved them. I do not think at my age I would purchase the Ryka but I do think they are cute and if comfort is in the shoe then all the better. I had my days of the 3-4 inch heels and now I can't do it. with a Herniated disc in my back I go for comfort first looks ... well Ok looks and comfort together .hehe

Thanks for the shout-out, mama. I will say the Kelly Ripa endorsement...well, okay. I won't say.

I love my Rykas. I hate sneakers. To me Rykas are what I shove on to run out when I would have ordinarily put on sneakers. They're not workout shoes and they're not for sipping cosmos at the Gaansvort shoes.

Another alternative I've been loving by the way are the Tsubos which make a similar Mary Jane style. And they're great with flared high wasted pants, as the fashionistas have told me.

As someone with nerve damage in my lower back (only 32 years old) this are way better than most of my option and quite comfy! They have another pair that are clog/mary janes in a variety of colors (cool trendy colors) that are nicer looking. Either way this style or the clog/mary jane styles are like a God-send to me. It has been imposssible for me to find anything even half way decent to wear that felt okay with the nerve damage. Believe me I have some seriously fuggggly ones in my closet - they would make you cry just to see them.
